what disciplinary actions can they take on you if you fail to catch someone who didn't pay for their items on the uscan?

lets not forget the times when we have to fetch a customer's cigarettes, or when we're busy helping one customer and some sneaky bugger sees an opportunity to bolt out the door without paying.

do they seriously expect the attendant to catch 100% of theft that goes on, given the nature of the job? those cameras they have overlooking them are a joke.

Nothing really, Clerks are not there to police customers. If we are not expected to stop shoplifters, why would I be expected to run down someone that didn't pay? In reality an SCO person can not keep track of all customers and which and which have not paid. Mr. Frontenac, your store doesn't have a "normal " SCO setup, it would be impossible to watch ever screen. With the NEW SCO's what do the blinking lights mean?

Well, I actually like the blinking lights. In the times when I'm not using the handheld, they come in handy. The lights blink every time a help screen is activated, ID check, item not found, etc. They also blink when there is no customer (the "Open" state) and it just has a warning to communicate, like printer paper is running low, or it's about to run out of money.

This particular ACSM told me to pay more attention, after some customer went off with $100 worth of groceries. Their reasoning was, they steal because nobody is there to watch them (as in, me). Exactly, the SCO attendant cannot keep track of all customers all the time. I mean, they should know more than me, that a thief doesn't care if I'm physically there, they're going to wait till I'm busy to leave, because they know it's inevitable.

And if it's a customer that just forgot to pay, or some glitch happened while they tried to pay, which made them think they paid, but they didn't. Well, yeah, me being there to catch that, would stop them. But, when I'm busy helping other customers, or fetching cigs for another customer, I won't be there to stop that customer that unintentionally didn't pay.

If you are not paid to be security, then they can't do anything really. Sometimes thieves work in groups. One needs "help" whilst his/her partner makes off with the merchandise. Some thieves even have their young kids with them when asking for help. Why? Because no one expects a "single" mom or dad to distract while the other parent walks out the door to wait.

As long as you call for security (whether they actually exist or not) you've done your job.

It depends.

If the items haven't been scanned, they aren't even going to know.  However, you can't really do anything anyways.

If they scan their order and leave without paying, you are supposed to transfer it to the pay station, cash it out, and then allegedly the tapes will be reviewed to see if you were doing your job or not.
