Leads being forced to work more than one night a week
Permalink

Michigan Division. Local 876.

I know all about full timers working one night a week, order of seniority, etc. But can the company just decide to work their leads 3 nights (like until 8 or 9) a week? It is ClickList and the excuse is that the dept falls apart after we leave.

If you're a department head, back-up or lead, then yes, management and/or corporate can enforce this.

Honestly wish this was implemented at my store. Too many teenagers/young adults playing on their phones/standing around doing nothing only to leave things a MESS for the morning people. Then management expects stuff perfect within a couple of hours of the store being open.

YOU. CANNOT. HAVE. A. GOOD. OPEN. WITHOUT. A. GOOD. CLOSE.

Management and corporate need to understand this if things are to get any better.

So rather than management deal with the lazy fk offs, the dept. leads get punished by having to staying over? What kind of sh!t is THAT?

F u c k you. YOU stay over.

Yep every day i get chewed out for not being set at 9am but it's not my fault that every night, no matter how many "Good close" papers i leave, we don't get a good close... The comanager's sign off on it and act like everything was done but it's obviously not. They aren't holding their end of the deal up.

We are just tired of it. Management needs to hold everybody accountable. They are going to lose their leads at this rate.

Management should be playing an active role, yes.

However, keep in mind that small Kroger stores typically only have a store manager and two co-managers. Larger ones have additional co-managers. Most nights you only have one closing co-manager; the rest of management is gone by 8:00PM. Signature stores have a front end, produce, deli, bakery, meat market, fuel, drug/GM & maybe Starbucks that all need to be checked. Marketplaces have all that plus more. That's A LOT for one co-manager, plus run the store in general.

If you have the department head close two nights a week, the back-up close two nights a week, then the other three nights of the week you have regular associates close (preferably on the slower days). Besides ensuring a good close, department heads and back-ups can use the time to train and coach associates that they may not see on a regular basis.

Personally, if it were up to me, I'd have it where each department had a department head and TWO back-ups, so you have better coverage, more responsible individuals covering more hours of the day and more opportunities to train and coach. That would require hiring an additional person to each department though and I know Kroger isn't going to do that but I do believe having a department head and two back-ups would improve conditions in store and result in things running quite a bit more smoothly.

Get a job that isn't open from 6/7am til 10pm/midnight/24hours and you won't have to work nights at all.  That's the solution.  If you're stuck working retail forever (my prayers for you), it does seem that leads and backups working more nights would help with nothing getting done in the evenings.

Work your night shift and quit bitching. Being in management means more responsibility, and you need to be up to date on closing.
