Yep, they're running that new program at one of the stores in my town. Customers are already bitching (as customers always do about anything new or different), and they can't seem to grasp how deadly important it is we do radical things to stop this shoplifting. Cuz that sh!t is out of hand
I've seen those in use in Chicago. The wheels locked up if you tried to leave the parking lot with a cart. I'm curious why they'd lock leaving the store...don't customers need to push their carts to their cars?

They can lock up in two circumstances: First, if someone attempts to go out of the store WITHOUT going through any of the checkout lanes (such as trying to sneak out through the door to the lobby near the produce area where they can bypass all checkouts including the U-Scan) the siren will sound and the wheels will lock up. Second, if the cart is taken out the "right" way - through the checkout lanes, BUT then someone tries to remove it Completely from the Kroger lot/property, the wheels will lock up!
Sometimes the cart will lock itself up EVEN IF items are paid for and you go through the checkstand. That has happened to me. Rather than wait for someone to unlock the cart I force it through (very difficult) or tilt the cary slightly to one side and roll it out that way. I've gotten strange looks and a chewing out in a "joking" manner
