Management is unrealistic and setting employees up to fail
Permalink

The manager comes over at 10, when we had nonstop customers for an hour, and asks us why Grab and Go isn't done. So we told him there were too many customers and he just ignored it and kept asking why it wasn't done. Maybe it's because you have two employees working, and if there's a line of customers you want everyone to drop what they're doing and wait on customers. But if we actually do that like we're supposed to, we get told off for not being able to get the grab and go done. Also he seems to be of the opinion that it can be done in one hour. Cutting just one set of meat (for instance, 24 .60lb bags of salami) takes half an hour or longer. He's delusional.

When I told him that it wasn't happening he told me "well other people get it done on time!" But I always work Monday mornings and we always have this problem because they're too busy on weekends to get much grab and go done and so come Monday morning it's empty out there, plus Monday is a busy day in general. On the rest of the weekdays it's a lot easier. I told him to get it done on time we'd have to ignore the customers and he said "no don't ignore them. I want it all done." Well sorry, I don't know what else to tell you, it's not happening.

I hear you. At our deli the chicken person who makes our fried chicken may have a HUGE order that needs to be done by a certain time for a customer. Suddenly, it gets crazy, beyond Christmas and other major holidays crazy. Chicken person and only ONE cashier. Chicken person can also make sandwiches. Not only does management NOT want chicken person to stop the huge order he has, the chicken person is ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN to ignore other customers and make them wait. BUT....he cannot stop the order he is working on.

Yeah, no matter what you do, they expect more more more out of you. Today I tried my hardest to get my floor set, i mean it was the day after a busy weekend, my floor looked pretty good, the only thing that looked a little out of order was our gluten free bread (that no one in this town even freaking buys) and i get ripped apart for not focusing on the details more. Things like the donut contest table (you know that has been picked over, because i'm in the top 5 in the district right now but do we have any compliments about that, hell no) isn't even, you know like god forbid someone took 2 off one stack and didn't make it even and conditioned.

I can't win with this damn place and i'm about ready to give up.

Back in 2011 I was working as a Visitor Parking attendant at a university my last employer had a contract with.

My last employer was very client based, and the manager over that account, whom I reported to, had to do what it took to make that client happy.

The Visitor parking booth I sat in was located roughly 70 feet from the Visitor parking garage and 50 feet from the Faculty/Staff garage.

During the spring of 2011 the Director of Parking and Transportation Services, the client Manager at the university, decided to renovate the Visitor Parking garage.

So, Visitor Parking was temporarily moved to the Faculty/Staff garage.

There was a call box at the entrance gate for anyone needing assistance as well as one at the exit gate.

Both gates were located on the same side of that garage.

Usually the Parking office staff, where the Director of Parking and Transportation's office was, would answer calls from anyone needing assistance.

But, the Director of Parking and Transportation Services told me that once the renovations began, I had to literally prevent anyone from pressing the call buttons because her staff were too busy to answer the calls.

I was supposed to assist customers driving up to the booth as well as do what the Director of Parking and Transportation Services told me.

I was not happy.

When I worked in retail I dealt with that bullsh!t all the time. These two responses I found worked best:

* "I'm doing the best I can with what I have. You want better results, give me better resources."

* "Oh, ___ can be done faster? Please show me. Demonstrate. You're the leader, lead by example. If you can teach me how to do my job quicker and better, I will from now on do it exactly your way!"

Both of those reponses, worded as non challenging and containing irrefutable logic, will send your manager stomping off in a huff, looking for easier victims. biggrin

I flat our told my management when she bitched at me for ignoring calls to come up and help bag .... AFTER I got chewed out for not getting the 14 pallets of grocery truck separated, I told her it was either I go up and help bag or I get this truck separated,  she couldn't have both.

She never called me again wink

What is this strange term, "logic"?  It does not compute at Krogrr.

To top it all off, we got a surprise visit from our douchebag district ops manager last night so this will do nothing but bring down morale even more as i'm sure we'll have another write up spree now.

Feeding the human spirit!

Come work for my store where people just get paid......

I'm surprised the store is still functional. I have plan b and c if plan a goes belly up.

My store is so bad they're sending in corporate to fix it. They do surprise visits in non uniform to be sure employees are doing what they should be doing. Store went down hill after our current manager took it over. His laid back approach to business ethics is too laid back.
