One rumor I'm hearing is that "department manager" positions are going to be replaced with "department lead" positions. Apparently it's the same position, just with cut pay and benefits.
We're already struggling to fill those positions, so it's pretty hilarious.
Personally, I'm all for it. Every step closer to Kroger's inevitable suicide makes me happier.
Instead of doing away with the in store positions and reducing pay (where we need more people), why don't they do away with some of the out of store positions. I've never worked for a company that has so many levels and layers of people above you. Coordinators, Directors, VP's, Business Unit, etc. Every person visits and tells you something different. One says you have to do it this way. Another can visit the next day and say that is wrong this is the way we are doing it. It is one of the most confusing and bizarre companies I've ever worked for. However, if they did away with some of those positions and saved on those salaries would it then go to more people in the stores? Based on what I've seen that would be a big fat no.
I've read a few posts where people are thinking Kroger might go bankrupt. I guess their thinking because there are so many in store cuts that Kroger is in financial trouble. I don't think that's the case. Just look at how much the corporate executives are getting in bonus money. I've only worked here for a little over a year (comanager and not much longer), but I'm starting to wonder if they are getting the company ready to sell off to private equity investors. Not immediately, but maybe in the next couple of years.
Every change they make seems to make it worse in the store for the employees and customers. More and more work for all levels of in store people and less and less hours to do it. It's like they are trying to drive employees and managers out of the company. If you want a business model for how to make a company fail...just look at Kroger's.

With unemployment so low, people can get comparable pay in other industries without the bull**** involved in grocery management. I got a job that pays the same as an assistant department manager with better benefits, better schedule, and no employees to manage.
Kroger is better off turning assistant store managers into department managers and making Dept managers leads. Pay everyone less, keep the store staffed.
The need for groceries won't go away. So if Kroger dies, the good news is some other organization gets to compete for the business without the current Kroger philosophy and all of its management cancer.
I'm a firm believer in supply and demand market forces. If you don't leave Kroger when you are disrespected, the incentive for Kroger management to change won't occur.
Socialism would have Kroger stay in place. Don't vote democrat unless you love Kroger management kind of people telling you how to live your life.
It was I, Pepe Le Troll, who began this thread; I like to sometimes throw you folks a bone to see how far you'll run with it.
BUT: I must say, it has produced some interesting responses! Good work, even if most of you are imbecilles who are perfectly ok with this John Wayne wanna-be moderator on here!
Does no one else realize that the union contract states that each store must have a Bakery Manager, Deli Manager, etc. It also lists the pay rates of each dept. head.
So without a complete contract negotiation, they just can't get rid of all the positions.

looks like 4hourfaggot didnt get the memo about this topic.
They will not downsize the stores, but rather not fill "clerk" positions as often. Department Manager positions will be relabeled as Leader to try and change the "cultural mindset". In reality Department Leaders will just be doing even more work and held to an even high standard. I would say expect most department to be in minimal staffing levels, basically 2 people at peak times. If your not up to conditions, they will say your not working fast enough. The past VP's and Presidents have to be shaking their heads in disbelief.... Remember when they always said, more sales more hours?
