I and another bagger opened one morning. I had to clean restrooms. They had carts.and other stuff. At one point the both of us had extra tasks put upon us. While we handled them the FS bagged for us.
A customer approached the FS and asks them where are all the baggers at. They replied that we had other tasks to do. The customer gets all huffy and goes, "What's more important than bagging?"
Well let's see. The restrooms have to be cleaned. The lot has to be cleared. Management/FS/customer care might have something for us to do. And we have other customers who are more understanding with us.
The FS said that the customer can go to Walmart where there aren't any baggers. See if they complain then. I heartily agreed.
Man, I wish they'd hire more baggers, or at least one more UC, so that they can have time to clean the rest rooms every couple hours. Instead of like... what... every eight hours?

I just wish that we wouldn't be shorthanded at all throughout the day. Mornings aren't the easiest but honestly.

You sound really lazy and not up to the tasks at hand. You should quit, kroger doesnt need lazy uneducated bums that cry all day cause of this so called too much work.
Instead of baggers, I once paged for all additional "double baggers" to help out on the front end; every slut in the store, both customer and associate, swarmed the front end!
Whenever I have people ask about this, my answer is always to correct them. Their job title is not "bagger" they're "courtesy clerks." They have multiple duties, many of which have to do with the safety and cleanliness of the store. (And they're grossly underpaid for all that they're responsible for.) I've actually had customers say, "Oh, I never realized that. I just thought they were responsible for bagging."
Yup, if I am with a customer, i can't just drop whatever I may be doing and bag right away. What am i supposed to do, leave the customer and say "sorry you're on your own." What kind of customer service is that (which my managers understand that if we are assisting them, they'd rather have us helping vs whatever else needs doing (within reason like an in store emergency) as that is why we are hired in the first place, to be "people first.") I've had many a time where I've been asked by FES and others to do things but if I'm not up front, they'll ask for me to call and then tell me what needs doing so i can take care of it. Like when we had a 6 pack of liquor drop and shatter from the cooler, once I was notified (and normally since I handle a lot of glass spills quickly and safely and such, I am usually the one they send on any glass spills), I moved on it quickly, did an initial assessment and consulted with MOD to make sure the other stock wasn't about to suffer the same accident after barricading the area, and got to work and handled it. I've also had to assist my co manager with other safety tasks around the store, like making sure all our wet floor signs and spill response kits are stocked and ready where they need to be while also doing a store sweep at the same time if need be. Plus now that we got a 35 cent raise across all contracts, i'm fine where i am and am not complaining (over 12 on a sunday while going to be 9.35ish for me, not bad

That is why most of our courtesy clerks at our store only do the bare minimum. Why take more on your plate if you're not going to be paid more?
But yes, safety is MORE important than bagging. Especially when a customer slips and falls right down. Happened at my store. So management has gotten life or death serious on the sweeps. Just last week we missed 6 sweep punches. ALL courtesy clerks got a written verbal. Even if they were innocent. Written verbal. (Not a Sir or anything that will lie dormant after 6 months or follow you your entire career at Kroger) so with that said, it will not hurt a checker to bag customer groceries if a cc is busy on sweeps. Leave the cc alone when they are on sweeps.
