UScan Handhelds

They took away all the handheld devices for the Uscans at my store. When I asked one of my managers about it he told me we werent using them anymore. I have no idea why, because they were really handy and its kind of annoying not having it anymore. I just think this is weird and cant figure out why they would do this.

I didn't think they were removing them from stores, but simple not replacing them if they damaged or missing. Going forward the Cashier Station Scanner will have able to barcode at each Lane which will give let you then scan items for that Lane.

Sometimes there's corporate pressure not to use the handhelds.  It prevents the attendant from just chilling at the podium with the handheld and cellphone side by side, and forces customer engagement.

Should be no problem for me. I never use them. They're utterly useless in every possible way. Especially now that the software was updated to flash a lane's light when an issue comes up. I mean, I never needed the flashing light before, but now that it's there, that's just icing on the cake.

1) Always get disconnected from the server for some dumb reason.

2) If you scan something with the handheld, you still have to wait for the Uscan to do its time delayed "please place the item in the bagging area" thing before you can scan another item. Making scanning with SPEED, like you can on a register, impossible.

3) Speaking of the handheld's scanner. It's ability to read is so weak compared to the hand scanner of a register.

4) Oh, and sometimes, due to the brilliance of the Uscan software, the handheld will connect to the main system, but fail to connect to certain Uscan lanes.

There's so many other things that the handheld can't do. And if it can do it, you could have done it much much faster by going to the lane itself and doing it there, or transfer to the attendant station.

So many other cashiers rely on the handheld to notify them that a customer needs help. What's wrong with just using your eyes to look around?

Also, I believe when the SCO reports are pulled every week, they expect each Uscan cashier to be using the handheld less than 20% of the time. That means, the at lane usage should be at 80% or higher. Perhaps no one at your store comes even close to that goal, so they figure, best to take your handhelds away.

Its easier to use the handheld to clear problems quickly. Customers just get aggravated and angry with it taking more time to walk over and clear, then they bitch about how horrible technology is.

It also prevents being able to scan large items which is a real problem for me.

How long does it take to walk over there?

Oh who cares about that, they'll complain about anything and everything. Customers are like little children. They'll scream and cry and make a mess. They will always make a mess, that is to be expected. In my opinion, a good attendant expects that of them and accepts it.
