Is it normal in Kroger Land for District Managers and other Corporate level people to socialize outside work with store comanagers? Just seems wrong to be hanging out with people under your direct supervision (Virginia). Does this happen in other areas?
Wonder if we're in the same area of Virginia. In our store we have a Co who seems to spend a lot of time on the phone with the business unit. She also talks about going out to eat and doing other things with them. It's kind of like their saying do what I tell you because I know people and I'm untouchable. I can talk to you any way I want and do anything I want. Treats associates and other co leaders like they are beneath her and ignores what store leader says. Doesn't do a lot of work unless someone above store level is in the building. Pretty sure they are the reason our Store Leader got moved. Not the greatest store leader in the world but not the worst either.
I've seen this before in another store and I'm pretty sure they are what I call a spy for corporate. My guess would be they make themselves sound good and try to throw everyone else under the bus. Most companies have policies against this kind of thing and for good reason. It just causes a toxic work environment which seems to be exactly what Kroger wants.
It's how people get promoted in this company. A produce manager in our district became a store manager based entirely on the fact that he was the district manager's golfing buddy. He became the golden boy, and opened all of the new stores. Three were a lot of older store managers who were salty about that.

The Leadership Model poster doesn't flow like that. So, should we take up golf?
Should we play on our one day off?
And, how should we pay for this leisure activity on $8.25 an hour?
We have a store leader who was good friends with an assistant store manager before they came to our store. Now you would think that because it's well known, the ASM would have been moved to another store so there wouldn't be any issues. Of course that would just be common sense and we know that doesn't apply at good ole Kroger. So, it's not working out so well for other ASMs and associates. However, the friend ASM seems to be enjoying an actual life outside Kroger what with all the weekend days off and shorter work days. Complaints to HR are just useless. Guess they just don't care how many associates and ASM's quit.
