Yeah, nonsensical waste of time. We are already under-staffed, crazy busy, and already have about 24 hours worth of tasks to complete in just 8 so that every day I have to keep axing tasks as I get closer to closing time. Now they want me to waste 10 minutes of every hour doing a worthless scan.
Then I also have huddles, and walks...
Walks: which sometimes happens like this: I make a mental list of all the things I need to stock. Let's say broccoli crowns and cilantro and cukes and bell peppers, for instance. As i'm headed to the back to make my cart, I hear the hourly chime. I turn around. Go back out and scan. Walk to the printer. Get the printout. Come back. They call a huddle. I walk back to where I just came from because the huddle is there. After huddle, I have to condition everything for the micromanaging pictures they have to take and send to the higher-ups. Then it's time for the walk. I go get the clipboard. I return and a customer stops me and asks for some lettuce. I have to interrupt the walk and go get some lettuce. Lettuce that would have been full already if we didn't have all of these redundant tasks to do. I return, again. We walk. The manager tells me that I need to "Umm... Get some... let's see here... Get you some broccoli crowns... and some cilantro. You're gonna need some cucumbers. Oh, and get some bell peppers too; they're almost gone." (Then the managers think, "I wonder why he let the cucumbers and such get so low? Good thing we're here to tell him what to do.") Really?! Who thinks this is smart?! Why can't I just go fill the damn shelves?!!! And you leave me alone, and stop holding my hand, and let me do my job. The job is to keep the shelves full so we can sell stuff and have it available for the customer; not talk about it.)
And the dumbest part of scans is telling me to scan oos items, every hour when they won't be in stock until tomorrow, or two days from now, or maybe even a week since it's a rarely in-stock item. "Scan it anyway. It only takes a few seconds. A few clicks." Oh, really? Have you tried using our crappy, broken handhelds?
Now all of this "may" be necessary if I was some of the workers who just don't care or know, but I know what I need to do and I want to get it done, but I am constantly interrupted.
Good thing I can write this here and someone from corporate will read it and change things for the better, and fix our handhelds, too... lol
I'm laughing because it's true! ABSOLUTELY true and NOBODY, I mean NOBODY gets it more than the people who have to deal with this insanity on a daily basis! Of course, I'm only laughing to keep from crying and in order to do THAT, I'm gonna have to laugh REAL hard!
Face it, people...THIS is NOT progress...
Apparently, filling shelves and having associates out on the floor is something the customers want and they've made that clear...Instead, we're doing a million other things that take us further and further AWAY from that goal...And more to come, I'm sure...
Yeah, if this company wanted to become paperless, well, they sure have a funny way of getting there, because all we're generating is piles and piles of paper (which at least can be burned)...If someone REALLY wanted to do something IMPORTANT, figure out how to eliminate more PLASTIC, and I'm not just talking about getting rid of those bags...Does anyone realize just how much plastic packaging is produced in this country and how much of it is ACTUALLY recyclable??? Have you looked at how many items in the stores use plastic that CAN'T be recycled? Yeah, I thought so...
Keep in mind that China doesn't want our garbage anymore (and neither does anyone else, for that matter), and most likely the stuff that CAN be recycled is being sent off to the landfills anyway...Seriously, folks...We've got to get MUCH, MUCH SMARTER about this stuff!
Nothing is going to change for the better until customers who are upset with out of stocks, lack of open check lanes/cashiers/baggers/associates being available to assist them, be it out on the sales floor or in specific departments, stop shopping Kroger! But so far, they haven't done that so Kroger just keeps tightening the screw! Hours & jobs will continue to be slashed year after year until it stops working for them & apparently it hasn't stopped yet! In fact, their fix for everything is to slash more hours all the while pretending that they care about our customers!
