Overnight Grocery

Do you guys have a grocery manager or backup everynight? We are to the point where 2 nights a week double truck we only have 3 part timers and having to unload trucks. I feel like this is management job.

How much fun is it pulling those Gatorade and Water pallets off?

No, it doesn't take a manager to unload a truck. It's a pretty simple job. A foreman should be there, though, if that's what you mean. Actual grocery managers can come in whenever they want. I've known some that like to be there with the crew overnight, while others would rather their normal shift start in the early morning.

No foreman. Not sure what that is. Only 2 part timers twice a week. We dont get paid extra. We do have 2 grocery specialists but work days. This store is falling apart. Only leads, backups and specialists who are paid to do these jobs should be doing them. I think a grievance is in orders

You don't make any sense.  Most stores are understaffed in every department.  I have a lot of bodies overnight but very few with work ethics.  And only a few know how to use power equipment.

Most night crews have a Night manager and a back up.  When the night manager is off, the back up is in charge.  A few smaller stores have only a lead overnight that is in charge.

At my store, day crew unloads Peyton(1000 +/- cases; 10+/- pallets).  Our grocery truck(1000- 1600 cases;15-25+/- pallets) is a drop and hook.  They drop the Grocery trailer and pick up the salvage trailer.  Not all stores have this luxury.  The perishable truck delivers between 10p and midnight.  Supposed to be between 8pm and 10pm but that hasn't materialized yet.  If there isn't anyone scheduled for the perishable departments, we unload that truck.  After the perishable truck is unloaded, then we can unload the grocery truck.  When one power jack is broken, it puts us behind schedule.

We have 4 double trucks a week and 2 single trucks.  I try to schedule 10+ people for double trucks and 6+ people for single trucks.  We have one night for running all the backstock each week(7 people scheduled)  We barely get done with running live stock and conditioning.  We rarely have extra time to run Active backstock like we are supposed to.  I do force hard hit aisles to have  active backstock run as often as possible.

I try to get as much work done as possible overnight with the people I have to work with.  There never seems to be enough people or time to get everything that needs to be done finished on time.

10 years ago, Grocery, Meat, Dairy, Produce and Frozen was delivered on the same truck.  Overnight unloaded it then and we unload it now too when there isn't anyone in those departments.  I doubt if you can file a grievance for having to unload the trucks.  You can grieve write-ups for not getting your work done tho.

I am curious how many cases each grocery truck has and how you'll run live stock.  Day crew is not supposed to be running grocery stock but sometimes they have to.  They should be helping run Active backstock but rarely do.

Been with kroger 10 years..last night we had 4 trucks. Grocery, 2 perishable and a expense. 2 part timers total..only scheduled from 11 to 4 but we stayed..grocery alone was 1000. You can't condition nor get much truck up..so no backstock gets ran. 3 people on days but get pulled to other departments. If I didn't show up the other part timer has no idea about anything. Store would of been screwed. Of course I can file a grievance. Already talked to grocery coordinator.

Thats my whole point! No night manager or backup. Good luck unloading 4 trucks, doing any of the truck, conditioning, backstock, cleaning up back room, getting pallets out for drug GM in 5 to 6 hours...lol. Plus rearranging and making room
