All stores have a union, and a contract, but not all stores are union. Right to work states have laws saying you do not have to join the union.

For a list of right to work states and information on your states law, you can check out www.nrtw.org/right-to-work-states/

All stores should be union contracted. UFCW unless other wise dictated as in local contract. The only positions in which are not union are click list, 3 manager, 2nd manager and 1st manager and select departments managers that have agreed not to be in the union. Parts of grocery stores that are union: front end, produce, deli, meat, seafood, grocery clerk positions, night crew...

If all stores have a union-are they still covered if they are in a right to work state? Confused.

On a related note, I am no longer in retail but am currently a member of the United Steelworkers. This is my first factory and union job, and I love it.

Having never experienced this but only hearing stories on both sides of the coin, union vs company, my opinions have varied. Now? Hell yes. Give me union representation. There is nothing like working in a place where management can't f u c k with you, no matter how bad they clearly want to. There's nothing like getting guaranteed raises, REAL ones, every 2 years. It's sweet getting all the benefits a non union shop won't provide you.

UNION, baby. All the way!

Eh.

In this right to work state, my local union is toothless and indifferent, and refuses to pick up the phone or call you back.  The one time I needed them, they weren't there for me (and it's a common story).

Guaranteed raises don't mean anything when they cap at part-time-only near-minimum-wage.

By the end of the year, union dues would be almost a month of rent, which means a lot if I'm basically breaking even at the end of the month before that.

If this was a real full-time job that paid at least as well as McDonald's or Walmart, with a union that would at least have the decency to cuss at me when I called them, no, I guess I still wouldn't join.

Dang.

The UFCW is a joke. I seriously don't see how it's legal, the s hit they pull

No the store I worked for 25 years was not union. The reason it did not open as union is because it was originally an M&M Supermarket or of Savannah GA bought out my Kroger. The store tried to go union around 2001 or 2002. But the people in my town said if the store went union they would no longer support the store.

Yes that was really told to the company by the local Chamber people.

So several years went by still no union then a few years ago the store was put on union pay scale but it was not union and as far as I know still is not union.
