Stepping down

I was recently promoted to department manager. Is there a minimum amount of time I have to wait before I can step back down into a different department?
Specifically, I make ~21/hr, and grocery night crew clerk makes 19 for less than a fraction of the work and I don't see the amount of work I have as manager being worth just a $2 difference, especially if I can make it up with OT.
thank you.

I would think it has to do with how your contract is laid out. Either way, you can expect a fight on your hands, I've seen things like this before. But if it's what you really want, just stick to your guns.

Under our contract, a department manager can go back to their previous position within 30 days.  If the vacancy has already been filled, I am not sure what happens.

Also, we are not allowed to sign another bid for 6 months to a year.

Speak with your union rep and ask what the formal process is for stepping down.  It must be put in writing.  The union rep will probably try to talk you out of it.  Other than that, you should be able to step down anytime you need to.

I think the clerks with 18 years, make $16.  I make $20/hr plus $2 night premium as a night manager.  Clerks hired after 2010 top out @ $14.  Night managers hired after 2018 start at $17 and top out @18.15.  In reality, I am just a glorified clerk with keys to the kingdom.

Before covid, I had enough help and we had a good crew with a good system to get everything done.  Lately, everyone has been slacking and lowering standards.  Rolling pallets to the back and not conditioning 100%.  I am ok with not conditioning if we get all the stock ran.  But, now my crew doesn't try to finish the truck even if we skip conditioning. The store managers don't give me too much grief about it.  Personally, I like to win everyday and that means finishing our job daily.  Keep losing traction week after week, month after month and it takes a toll on everyone.  Way too many call ins and people quitting.  The people they do hire aren't the brightest so I have to work with what I get.  Attendance being reset several times in 2 months annoys the crap out of me.  But, on the other hand, if they fire 75% of night crew, who is going to get the work done?

The orders being sent have been bigger than Christmas orders.  Yes, 20-40% of order is getting scratched but still.  There is barely enough time to run double trucks with a small crew.  I am not sure how well the next two months will play out.  I'll wait and see.

And, Yes, I have considered stepping down after 4 years.  It is not an easy job.

In the last 4 years there has been an exodus of Department Managers/Leaders in ALL departments. You have to ask yourself, why have so many people with 5, 10, 15+ years saying its NOW not worth it? Even "back in the day" being a Department Manager/Leader wasn't the easiest thing, but now your being called out for every little detail. Saying something didn't get done because a "call off" isn't a valid excuse, but people fail to see that 90% of everything else got done, with less labor then required!! Anyone that makes schedules will tell you hours every year get lowered and lowered. Apparently stocking a case of vegs. gets easier year after year and so less hours are needed.

You can always request to step down and say it was  bad decision to step up it's just too much. It can happen fast or generally they drag their feet.

Around here, contracts are basically secret and the union is absent and uninterested.

There could be a time limit, but the union won't help you and the store will drag their feet or backdate paperwork such that you are out of luck.

Oh well.  You could probably leverage experience pay elsewhere?

Yup, I never understood how there could be "agreements" after the contact was ratified.  I can understand small understandings with some departments being established or eliminated, but I don't understand why the Union isn't filing grievances day after day to enforce the contact.  I guess the Union Presidents $480k yearly salary or then Union Reps. $80k salary isn't enough for them to actually due their jobs.  Also, where does all the weekly Union Dues go? Wonder how big the strike fund is now...........  I suggest everyone do the Math for their UFCW area...... Number of Union Members in your UFCW X what you pay weekly = A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY X 52 WEEKS A YEAR
