How to move up in this company?

These low level positions are just crap to work under.. without being too blunt how can one move up without sucking pussy or eating penis? I just want to make a little more money and get out of the front end hell.

There are two ways:

1) Wait for someone to die, transfer, or quit and hope you have the seniority to be placed in that position.
2) Take a management training course.

This is a slave labor paycheck job and nothing more. Don't hold your breath on moving up the ladder or being offered advancement in any way shape or form. Management sucks if you want to advance and abt the most you can do is lead positions. Best advice: transfer to grocery and work until you max out at journeyman pay then you have a so-so livable paycheck. Don't hold your breath at having a career here. Expect to be treated like cra-p and shi-it half your career. When I am closing cashier I won't even stay in the front end because I'm sick of the a$$enine bi-tches hate bashing self checkout.

Meat dept is where all the money is at. Spend 2 or 3 yrs and hone your skills then apply for management

Nah.  Start putting in applications elsewhere.  Walmart pays more, and Target pays much more.

Short answer: Don't advance. Seek another company.

Ways to move up in the company:

Wait for openings to occur at other local stores. Apply. Don't become comfortable at any one location. Fastest way to move up is be a floater as positions open.

Kiss ass to someone and maybe an opening will come to you.

Transfer to a store with high turnover.

Transfer to a store/location/department desperate for help.

I can honestly tell you that moving up has 1 and only 1 advantage and that is you will make a little more money.  My advice to anybody starting with this horrible company is to shoot for a full time position working on the night stock crew.  If there is overtime to be had, this is where you most likely will get it.  Also, for the most part you will not have to deal with customers and the only manager you should have to deal with is the night grocery manager.  If you get along with him, then it is smooth.  You are going to have some oddballs to work with, some potheads, alcoholics, an occasional guy with a bad attitude, maybe even a retard or autistic type here and there but it is much better than being in there during the day shift.  You will get a more steady schedule, 50 cents or 1 dollar more per hour for working overnight depending on your contract.  Sometimes you have to deal with an ******* floor crew guy that is a subcontractor, sometimes they are cool.  If they don't buff your store, he will only be in your store a maximum of 3 or 4 hours of your shift so not that big of a deal.  Getting full time is hard though.  I believe the high ups don't want anymore people "rolling over" due to the high cost of medical insurance.  They feel they can get just as much out of 2 twenty hour guys than 1 forty hour guy and don't have to give out additional benefits and pay.  I "rolled over" twice actually by working on the night crew and working all the hours they would offer me.  They will try to keep it from happening 2 weeks before your 12 consecutive weeks by cutting you to the bare minimum hours allowed by the union contract but if you worked any overtime and averaged 32 or 35 hours a week for 12 consecutive weeks, no short hour weeks, then you should roll over.  Your store manager can not prevent it once it has happened.  If you are already full time however there is zero benefit to moving up and becoming a supervisor.  You might make an additional 1 dollar an hour are as much as 2 bucks an hour if you work in a super big store but the additional amount of responsibility they put on you will nearly drive you mad so it is not worth it at all.  I also see no benefit to moving into salary management with this company because you will no longer be covered by the union for job security and they will move you all around, work you all kinds of crazy hours, and there is zero work/life balance.  Honestly, for what this company expects out of their managers and supervisors as well as their regular employees, they should pay everybody double what they actually pay people to offset the expectations.

I have worked at both Walmart and Kroger.  Walmart starts you out at more if you are coming in with zero retail experience.  Kroger, however, ends up paying you more than walmart if you roll over to full time and put in 5 plus years.  To make 15 bucks an hour at Walmart you have to be a supervisor or higher.  You can make 15 bucks an hour at Kroger as a fulltime employee with 5 plus years of continuous experience with Kroger.  Target does pay more to start but in my experience, they are focused on hiring young, attractive females and males but mainly females and if they have a retail background already that is a bonus.   Also, Target does not like giving their employees more than 35 hours a week regardless of how good you are.  People get caught up in that hourly rate rather than the total compensation.
