Be HAPPY you missed out when you were on LOA. Actually, I would expect that within a few months, if not sooner, the employee who got the lead position while you were gone will be having near-mental breakdowns from the stress the managers put on most of the dept leads now, and they may start BEGGING you to take over and save the day!!!! Are you SURE you want that stress????
I'm not mad because someone else is lead. I'm mad because that person tried once failed and said they didn't want it any way. Im also mad because I didn't go to management about the position, management came to me.

sounds Like the other person was more qualified seeing as how to pretty much flaked on your first day by leaving. Maybe take some personal time to think about what you did wrong and how to handle it better next time.
