Getting lectured for doing my job?

Earlier this week one of the supervisors hands me a frozen return and asks me to put it back. I go and do what I'm told, but along the way I'm paged to come back up to the front end by the department head. They wave me over and I explain my task and then I'm told that it's the supervisors' job to handle returns and that I'm not supposed to leave the lanes. But when I was handed the return, no one had come up to the lanes for a good five minutes and there was another courtesy clerk to handle only two lanes. Now I've worked at this place for quite a while (15+ years) and I don't recall such a thing. It was the courtesy clerks that handled returns, especially the perishables. And I get chided for doing what I was told? What kind of power tripping is that? If that's the way it goes then next time I'll tell them nope, can't do it, I'm supposed to stay up here, talk to them. And if I'm chided about that I'm going to ask for a printed out list that describes every rule in extreme detail so that everyone is on the same page.

Courtesy have always been allowed to return perishable items. What were you suppose to do? Let the item thaw out? It's stupid to think it's the supervisor's job to handle returns. Their job is to see that the front end runs smoothly and people get their breaks and lunches in a timely manner. They can't be constantly running through the store returning unwanted items. I'm curious as to what happened between the supervisor that told you to return the item and the department head that said not to.

 Its easier to just say this fool told me this and just not care what the other people say. Management are idiots let them earn their bonus by doing the reshop. lazy bastards

If it gets bad you can talk to the store manager abt it. If it is the store manager about it file a union grievance for too much micromanaging and feeling uncomfortable with it. I did that a few times for managers being over baring micromanagers and dicks about tedious rules that most people over look or never do.
