Happened in our store last week in the Local 1996 area. Store manager was only in our store two years then last week got bounced out. Kroger presented it as a "promotion" but I did a little digging on store manager disciplinary action and many times if there is a possibility of a wrongful termination lawsuit (especially if the person is a DEI black), Kroger will move that person to a position that does not give them daily contract with store associates, especially if there have been many documented complaints to regional HR.
