Hostile workplace and "gang" mentality
Permalink

ok,I work DSD in my store.  The new grocery backup and his cousin intimidate and yell at everyone. I personally stand up for myself,  so now they have taken to hitting me with carts,  running over my foot with the power jack.  (which btw my manager said when I talk about it, I have to say he "non maliciously bumped into my footwith the pallet jack)

We have had customer complaints about the grocery backup hitting customers with carts who were in his way.  |They were ignored.  This same guy yells and degrades an older grocery clerk constantly with comments like,  "aren't you too old to be moving that fast"

I told the Manager that I felt like I had to watch my back constantly to avoid being the target of this "gangs" retaliation for speaking up for myself and my coworkers. My  manager said he hadno proof that any of this was happeneing.  I told him that if it continues I'd have to go over his head.  He said, well if you do that they are just going to come back to me to handle it, then you'll have "guy" and me to deal with.

So I have no way to protect myself,  my co-workers or even my customers from this guy and his cousin.

I'm currently looking for other employment, but what will that do for the store that I really do care about other than get myself out of the situation?

Calling the Union is of no help by the way.  Our union reps come in once every 3 or 4 months, create a fuss, and drama by closing registers down to talk to the cashiers, which make lines back up, which makes other employees have to do extra work.  |So our union is useless, prolly why we only have 3 people in our store in it.

Any ideas would be wonderful .. thanks

is the store mgr. "buddy buddy" with the district loss prevention manager? if they're not tied at the hip, then get ahold of your dist. LP mgr, and fill em in on what's going on.. be sure you tell him/her that you've already spoken with the store mgr, and at this point you fear retaliation from the upper levels of management within the store, and you'd like to have someone outside the store help to resolve the issue.

or, contact your local police dept. and find out if assult charges would stick or not, given the lack of support from your management staff, and the "your word vs. their word" nature of the situation.

do you have cameras recording where this is happening? if so, try to remember specific dates of the worst events against you and have the police request the camera footage for review to help solidify an assult charge.

best of luck to you, and be prepared to leave soon if you do take that level of action against a manager. unless they're moved out of the store, or fired, you're more than likely going to open a whole new can of retaliation.

I appreciate the help on this question.  Yeah I kinda realize that I'm screwed no matter what. I also realize that I will have to leave my job.  I could do what everyone else is doing and just look the other way,  like I said he doesn't really treat me like he does some of the other people,  especially the older people.  He, like any other bully, only picks on those that he knows will not turn back on him.

I honestly wish that I could forget about the way he treats my coworkers,  but it does bother me.  I guess that whole Honesty, integrity, inclusion, diversity, stuff is just words that flow.  It works well when it works, but if it's not working,  don't tell us about it. We aren't going to do anything to change the status quo, and if your one of the squeeky wheels, we don't need you here.

Dissapointing at the very least..

I hope some of you guys have a better work place and if things do go wrong you have someone there who will evaluate and correct the situation in a fair and reasonable manner.

best of luck at Kroger

One other thought I'll add to my previous post...

I don't know where you stand on a personal standard level, but the option always remains to do a bit of retaliation of your own...  I've been in a situation like that myself, and ultimately I said "one more time and we can bypass the boss and do it my way, there'll be a power jack finding its way over every bone in your foot"...

It stopped at that..

if it hadn't... well.... I guess there would've been a power jack sitting on his foot.. lol

Like I said, that depends on your personal/moral limits.  I was pushing mine with my actions, but it worked..

Never ever go to management with workplace complaints.  Ever.  That was your biggest mistake.  Always go to your shop steward first, if he doesn't do anything, talk to your union rep.
