well...i am in the same boat with you right now. only my newcomer isn't as old as i am, nor does she have my work experience. but, it looks like she is going to get the position that i have worked hard for the past year to earn. i am trying not to be bitter, but today i am just worn out.

So how are things now? Are you still in your position or has that changed?
I tried to put myself in your position, asked myself what would I do. For what it's worth, here's what I came up with:

I know my job (and I'm sure you know yours) so de-stress and start with a good dose of self confidence. You're in the position, the new person isn't. You have a job to do, so do it with confidence an handle whatever comes along like you're the one in charge. If you're already in a hole with management on this, ask for a private 15 minute sit down with your store manager. Let them know you've had some issues that you have resolved and want to start over with a clean slate. Tell him/her that you stepped up to the plate when no one else would and you are ready to run your section and look forward to the challenge. Let him/her know if you have their support, you'll do everything you can to make money for your section and make them look good. As long as you're sincere, that should go a long way to getting your bosses on your side.

Its an oft used phrase but, take ownership of your job. I'm assuming the new person works for you, use their experience to better your department. Don't approach them like they're competition, they are a useful part of your team. Have a quick meeting with them (can be 5 mins in the hallway or back dock). Let them know that you are willing to learn from them and you will expect them to help your section be successful. In return, you should be willing to teach them and help them move up in the company (if they want to). Make it clear that it will not be in the job you currently hold unless you get promoted or decide to move on. Make it clear that the only way they'll get ahead is if you and your department look good.

Last thing, Don't get stressed out over the situation, you'll draw attention to yourself, make errors, and will cause your own downfall. Do not involve management any further unless absolutely necessary. Management will always look favorably on leads/dept. heads that do not require constant attention from them.

For what its worth, hope that helps.
