Usually (variesfrom store to store) there is no doctor's note required for missing a single day. If multiple days are missed or absences are frequent, then you will be asked for a doctor's note before you can return to work. That's a fairly common practice for any employer.
Unless you have a serious sickness (and it sounds like you do), your best bet is to take some over the counter medicine and go in. Let your supervisor or manager know you're unwell and ask to be sent home if business is slow or when you can be spared.
You'll look like a trooper for coming in and you wont lose a full days pay. You might even find that working takes your mind off feeling bad. Works for me on the rare occasions I'm sick.

For 1 day, no. But if your really sick for more than that you need to go to the doctor. Doctor excuses are no big deal. As for being a Trooper it'll really get you no where with Kroger. If your a walking germ spreader you don't need to be handling food. If you come to work sick, you pass it on to co-workers which then creates shortages on down the road, they talk it home and pass it around then to the kids.

In a more reputable profession, it'd be suggested you not come in and pass it around. But at Kroger, they'd have you come in on your belly dragging yourself so they'll have someone to put their Fruity-O's in the shelf.

Thanks for clarifying my comment OldToys. Of course I meant minor ailments, not anything serious/contagious. Like every other employee, I'd want the really sick ones to stay home until they're better. I don't want to take anything home from my job but groceries and a paycheck:)

I'm assuming they called in sick for a reason. I would guess he couldn't or shouldn't be working. So that's probably a NO to being a trooper.

You might be surprised at what I hear on a daily basis as a department head. Stomach ache (too much pizza), headache/migraine (too much beer/liquor), queasy/throwing up (but ok to go to the mall, hang out with friends, or come in to shop/pick up paycheck). My favorite is still the parent that calls in for the 18y/o to say they're sick. I tell them that they (the parent) doesn't work for me and that the employee needs to make the call or its an unexcused absence.
Those are the kinds of "illnesses" that I'm referring too when I talk about being a trooper and coming in. As I stated before, if the sickness is real...stay home! Otherwise, take some medicine (or suck it up) and do the job.

I know i had a pretty serious thing with my throat this past winter and you could hear me coughing and my voice going in and out. I pretty much told them if they wanted everyone who came in contact with me to have what i had (which was not fun i may add) that they can make me come to work and i will. but they let me go because i sounded so bad, and after 2 years there, i have called in 4 times. and only 2 were sick days, and i come in all the time when they want me to.

Today, actually I had called in sick. They say to call an hour before your shift starts...I had called about an hour and thirty minutes prior. I really don't care if they talk crap about me, I WAS sick, and still feel like pure garbage. I haven't been with the company long, but during my time...I haven't missed or came in late one day yet, till today of course. I didn't feel like shoving stacks of bread in a shelf, and changing a table display, not today, not feeling like death.

I had to call in sick today. I work for a kroger company. this is the second time that I had to call in sick. let alone this year. last time i called in sick was two weeks ago. I was throwing up this morning. but company policy is 2 hours before work. But I called in a half hour before I start. I started at 6am.

Iam somewhat good friends with my assistant floor supervisor. I get texts from her saying that we need you right away at 945am. Shes like ither that or you'll get a doctors note. Im a little pissed off because. I know other workers call in sick more than twice this month. Shes telling me to go to urgent care. My doctors does not have that. But what I did is that I schedueled and appointment the next day. But she still says urgent care.

Typically on some contracts they require you to bring in a doctors note after you've called in for the last 3 days. It was good of you to give them even a two hours notice. If you're running a fever and you tell them the health department typically requires that you go to a doctor and bring in a doctors note before you can return to work to stop the spread of infection.

I don think it is appropriate to overburden our health care system for a simple cold or fever which will run its course in a day. I am hearing from fellow employees that they are being asked to bring a doctor;s note in for simply calling out for 1 day. I dont think this is appropriate from the employers standpoint on several fronts - like I stated already + the whole trust/honesty situation. I'm just wondering what the true policy is

I agree about the whole burdening of the system. If I'm sick for a day and I know I'll get over it quickly, I usually just go in and if it's THAT bad I'll go home early. My boss is pretty understanding. I don't normally go home when I'm sick, though. And of course, I wash my hands frequently to avoid spreading any germs to anyone...
there is a guy I work with who I have seen COUGH INTO HIS GLOVES which makes me want to vomit. I have talked to my department head, who has spoken to this guy, but unless the DH is around, he still doesn't change his gloves. Or almost worse, he wears the plastic gloves under the nylon gloves and only changes the top ones. :(

I work for Ralphs and I was busy until 8:15am diarrhea and then both until 8:15am. I only called 40 minutes before shift. I didn't really know the policy but I thought it was better than a no show. I thought maybe it would be over soon so I said I would come in at noon 2hours from my original 10am start. I did come in and 40minutes in I could not work no more. I was ready to vomit and faint. On Thanksgiving night I picked up with paper towels someone's green bean casserole vomit. My front end managers are so mad at me. I was flu sick 7years priority to this. They said I couldn't do my cleanings any more last night. I feel like I may get fired. I had to go without pay because I'm part time still and already received in October my anniversary and sick year pay. What could happen?

1) Possibly because someone did a Google search using certain keywords, and an old discussion thread showed up in the search results. They replied to that thread, thus the thread has been given a jump-start after years of being dormant. Does this hurt anything?

Ive been there 5 months never called out, but I had to take off last thursday for mil funeral & yeaterday i had to go to the dr for a kidney stone & was put off work til monday. I hope ill be ok , but who knows! i only work about 8 hrs a week.
