What has the union done for you lately?

What the union has done lately for me/us is ........
 
I am in  a small shop ( 48/8 in McKinney Texas north of Dallas) and have one assistant one good clerk ( that is my meat cutter) and three turtles. Slow moving part timers. My one clerk is only 24 and had no experience when hired almost two years ago. he in now my meat cutter and can do most anything I need or my assistant needs. We was going to try to start to plan on getting rid of him by next year. Want to see him promoted to market assistant and hopes of him being a future market manager. Things moved a little quicker and he was transferred out this week. He was willing to go as long as he was made the assistant. The meat MR moved him with that intention and then went on vacation. My old clerk called and said they was not going to make him that anytime soon but was looking at it for the future. Calls from me, my assistant and surprising support from our store manager, got something done. On the second day the union saw there to file the grievance and have him placed back in my store or made the assistant right at that moment.  I got a phone call back that evening and he was told he was now the Market assistant. If not for the union help then there would be nothing to stop Kroger from wanting to move anyone somewhere else and not promote them when it is called for. I have known this manager before and although he is a good guy, he will take advantage of using someone at a hire rate position  without the promotion and pay , if he can get away from it.
 
Same manager that would not let my assistant be an assistant , with the pay , until a little known quirk in wave one of Key Retailing came into effect. Market schedules had to have an assistant named in the marker and scheduled that way. He listed her as the assistant and that opened the door for the union to get her promoted ands several other that was deserving of it.

part of the problem, is kroger has been doing a good job of undermining the union, at any turn,  and never saying anything good about them.
so, sometimes, it's hard to see what gets done.
now, personally, i've had to call upon the union only once, before now, and that was when my lovely store manager tried a set up job, with a personal freind of hers, posing as a mad customer, to get me a suspension.
the union shut that down, rather fast, and it was resolved, thou she didn't get in any trouble.
point is, if there was no union, kroger would gladly stomp all over each one of us, with no second thought. the union at least makes sure they can't get away with near murder.
is the union perfect? hell no. they are slow as hell,don't communicate as well as they should, and let kroger slide too often.
BUT, things would be a lot worse without them

Grumpy, I think that is only part of the website that our local union updates. My union rep isn't even listed! Those guys got moved around a few years ago too. Our LAST contract was NEVER put on the website. They never list union meetings.

My union got me an ok-ish contract. I'm cool with that. I don't need anything else. I pay my dues, I call with questions they get answered.

Well at least your local has something there. Ours has one but has not been updated forever. Some of the reps never even check emails. They got the tecnology but just never use it or update it.
 Our contract committe gets back to talks on this thursday and there are a few of us that has been moved to a few differant stores also.

So for about 22 cents per hour on a 40 hour week, would you be better off without paying the union dues  or not having a union there?

CINCINNATI Union workers of Kroger here have approved a new three-year contract, the retailer said Friday.

The new agreement covers more than 12,000 employees working at 76 Kroger stores and 39 fuel stations in metro Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 75.

Kroger and the UFCW worked together to reach an agreement that provides our associates the best total compensation package in our industry in Cincinnati," Geoff Covert, president of Kroger's Cincinnati/Dayton division, said in a statement. The three-year agreement provides good wages, high-quality affordable health care and a pension for associates when they retire.
