Upset about Kroger and our Union Contract
Permalink

This past summer, our union contract was up and got a new one voted in. Fine. But the problem is, there is this older cashier (probably 63,64 y.o.) who has worked for kroger for over 30 years. She didn't get to vote and didn't get to see the new union contract because she was out of town. The new union contract states we must work 24 hours per week for insurance starting January 1. She only worked 2 days a week so she went up to 3.

Problem is, nobody mentioned the fine print that said you have to work 24 hrs average starting 3 MONTHS before Jan. 1. They also said that because she's part-time, whenver she takes a PH day or vacation week, she has to make up the lost hours that add up to the insurance. I work in the front end and know at least 5 cashiers who have lost their insurance, including the older lady who has a lot of medical problems and needs the insurance.

Kroger keeps hiring new cashiers so the hours get spread out so people can't average 24 hours per week. I just don't think it's fair that these people who have worked for Kroger for 15,20,25,30 years lose their insurance just because they're not full-time. I think it's insulting and shows how Kroger doesn't care for their employees. Their plan of getting rid of people with benefits is working, and soon the front-end will be a few full-timers and all kids looking for minimum wage jobs.

Part-timers: 20 hours@ $8 or less

vs.

Full-timers 40 hours @ 9-13 plus full time benefits, unless of course you work in the fuel department then you're out of luck.

then there's the lifers, the ones been there for 25+ years that are so grandfathered in, if the world blew up they'd find one of the manager's in hell and ask why they couldn't clock in.

When are you people gonna learn.? I worked for almost 5 years for Kroger and lost my insurance twice over that span. Only lost it because they want to work the PT's 5 days a week like a FT but give only PT hours and benefits. YOur average has to equal 24 hrs over a 3 month span, if they cut you back then they don't have to kick into that kitty for your insurance. They tried to make me come in for a lousy 4 hours a night. I worked night stock and had always worked night stock for many other grocery store chains other than Kroger. I had to drive 64 miles round trip for 4 a hour shift. I was spending an hour wages each night out of that 4 hours for gas then 1.5 hours travel time plus wear and tear on my vehicle.Just so they can put a warm body in there as cheap as they can. They want to give PT's 4 hours to do as much work as a 8 hour employee.Rag you to sling it as fast as you can then turn a blind eye to a FT's working 8 hours a night and never say a word when they slow down to burn their 8hrs. Now I worked PT for Kroger because I wanted to, not because I had to. So I told them to stick it and I walked away. Sometime you have to just walk away or you'll get stuck in that rut. Kroger has to be one of the worst grocery stores I ever worked for. I transferred from Delta division to a Tenn division after 2 years and didn't have a problem till I came to Zone 1. I'm glad I walked. My life is so much better.

And talk about "lumps", I seen more lazy white hillbillies in TN than the african americans in the delta zone.At least they tried, in zone 1 they spend more time trying to find someone to delegate their workload to. They should be imbarrassed. They truly give  hillbillies or rednecks a bad name, hahahaha. Just abunch of worthless overpaid leeches hoping for someone to cover the workload so they don't have to do anything but show up for a paycheck.

when it comes to contracts, everybody MUST STOP and READ and ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS before voting.  It amazes me how easily we follow pursuit like little lemmings jumping off a cliff...
