Does anybody know if there is a standard clean up procedure? I put the wet floor sign out and the manager yelled at me for doing it wrong. I mean how can you put up a sign wrong??

As long as you
1 Put up a hazard sign
2. Swept and or mopped the area and left a sign there I dont know why they would yell at you.

Mops are normally only used in the restrooms or on hazard spills, as bleach is required. Normally to clean up spills at our store we use the "soak cloths" as we call them for smaller spills and for larger we use spill magic and a broom as they don't wet the floor. I use hazard signs for spills that have yet to be cleaned (while getting something to clean up with) and posted in, just outside, and/or to the restrooms 24/7 so that i don't have to worry when i mops them. 'Cause no one really cares.

If you're really concerned about what he wants you to do just ask him. There is a standard procedure in the handbook/paperwork/training material(computer lessons) you went through on your first or second day of work, though.

I'm with bagboy on this on.  just go up to the manager and say "hey you were a little bit of an ass to me the other day when i was trying to do the right thing by putting out a sign for a spill.  can you please tell me what I should do that i didn't  so you won't freaking yell at me next time like some kind of nutjob.  thanks.  and oh yea, if you ever feel like apologizing to me i wll be over there (pointing to the area you work in)."

<s>he'll get the picture and will tell you what <s>he expects.  then you can see if it is reasonable or not...

 Depends on the manager.  I wouldn't phrase it the way thedude said, but depending on how bad the situation was, you could approach it this way:

"I didn't appreciate the way I was talked to earlier and I wanted to ask what is the correct way of handling this". 

Of course, location is key in these type of situations.  If its on the floor, you're better off discussing it in private, although I have seen managers embarrass employees on the front end and the employee turns around and embarrasses them right back.  Then it goes upstairs.

yea well i was sorta just suggesting one of several hundred approaches you could take on handling this particular situation.  but we really should stop being so sheepish and lets call it like it is.  if the guy was an ass then he needs to be made aware that he was. however if you are uncomfortable using that term to the ass of a co-manager then instead say "hey you were a little STRONG the other day when..."

is that better or more politically correct?

but hey lets look at this a little bit further.  I personally would never let a co-manager yell at me over placing a wet-sign on the sales floor.  when he begins to yell face-to-face with me I would look around for several seconds then say "who are you talking to?" he'll get the point.  then if I was to approach him later and say "hey you were a little bit of an ass..." and he was going to fire me over that, first off i would say it one on one to him so it would be a little hard to prove factually the true context of the conversation. then when he is describing the scenario to HR and the store manager I would say "well yea, it sounds to me that maybe you were a little bit of an ass don't you think?" and let the store manager and HR agree.  point is you will not get fired & I was suggesting a little snugly that this particular person needs to stand up for himself/herself and make it known (using whatever verbage chosen) that maybe the approach taken the other day was inappropriate.

Being politically correct has nothing to do with anything....at all. Anyone with half a brain can see the person was being an ass about the wet floor sign. Being respectful (which is not "politically correct") even though the manager wasn't, will get you farther than using foul language. Why even waste your time with HR when you can solve the problem yourself? thedude...did you say you were a manager? I thought I read that some where but I may be wrong.

i am here trying to give guidance & support to my fellow kroger employee not to get into debates over semantics. i get my fair share of debating with my children and their friends...
