Just wondering how many stores this is going on in.  Recently our department heads and higher up managers have been going around talking about "less is more." They even have stickers. I'm a stocker and they've been putting up the stickers all over the back room.   Basically it means "more work for less hours."  They're trying to cut back on hours and trying to get us to work harder/do more in an hour. 

What I want to know is why employees would want to go along with this?  I can see why the managers would, it saves money and gets more done.  But basically they're saying they want us to work harder so they can cut our hours and pay us less for more work.  What were they thinking?  I wonder if this is just our store or all the Krogers.

It's a stupid idea.  It's not fair to the employees who give 100% everyday and the ones who goof off most of the day aren't going to work any harder than they already are.  It'll be like trying to get blood from a turnip.  I foresee a lot of employees quitting if this becomes widespread.

It's just an obvious intimidation tactic, and not exclusive to Kroger. I've been dealing with this kind of mentality for the ten years I've been with my retailer----they use different names and slogans for it, but it's all the same crap.

What will happen is, the weaker/more easily pressured employees will fold under and drive themselves into ill health and/or unemployment....while the tougher ones will last until they're ready to leave (or go into salaried management, the Mecca for retailing jobs). We've all seen this stuff a million times~

Do your job to the best of your abilities and call it a day.

our store is cutting our nightstock hours as well but it doesnt work. I have yet to clock out on time due to this crap and I really don't care. I clock out when I get the job done. My other coworkers are the same way.

 I agree, it will never work on over nights where ninety-plus % of stocking is done; at my store, that's the only shift that is still getting new hirees and forty hour work weeks.

Another thing: I hope nobody buys into this crap of having to shave off time from one shift because of O.T. on another....That's another game retail management likes to pull.

We just had a supervisors meeting about "giving 5% more". When I heard that I asked, "5% more of what!?" The store manager told me he wanted 5% more work out of everyone. I asked, "you mean you want 5% MORE work out of people who are already running around like crazy trying to wait, help and clean up after the customers already? AND, you also want 5% MORE out of supervisors who are TRYING to supervise, but also run the office, u-scan and help the employees/customers with problems as well?" I swear to God, with a straight face he said yes! I know every single department is going through this because EVERYONE is talking about it. What I want to know is, isn't there something we can do about it? I don't mean anything stupid like refusing to do what's asked of you. I mean can't the union be brought into this? Kroger can't seriously expect people to do the things they are asking of us!

@ Oboro: I would just keep myself valuable. Do what you've already been doing; show up on time, do a good job, keep a friendly positive attitude. As for moving 5% faster, just keep the pace you've been going. There is no way to objectively quantify one person's natural speed to another's.

As for the union? Hmmm, doesn't sound to me like they've been doin a real bang-up job lately...! lol~

          Our "union dude" goes all out for us. He even makes special trips to the stores for the                   stock guys and overnight people. I found myself in a situation through no fault of my own             and he fought for me like a pit bull, proved it was the co-managers horrible screw up and               she got fired. I believe in my union rep...that's why it boggles my mind about the other                 union rep we've been talking about.

 Yea, sorry Oboro. I shouldn't have blanket stated it like that; I am actually pro union--------when they work for the people who appointed and pay them. I've just been reading some funky things to the contrary on here~

I personally haven't heard about this "More for less" crap. It sounds like some stupid buzz phrase they came up with in a board meeting somewhere and decided to push out to the stores. As for me, I earn what i pay. And besides that i am a damn cheap steal b/c I think I am worth a lot more than $15/hr. But I settled for that and am willing to come in and work 40 hrs a week. I do not know how people could even get out of bed and go to work for $8/hr! Then kroger expects hard work out of them!?!? Come on...

I give the poor kids in my department a break b/c I know they are getting screwed in pay. yes i need work out of them but i will not crack the whip. Somewhere along they walk of my life I learned the CHOPPING BLOCK THEORY. it pretty much states that a person will chop real slow at a lower wage than a person who gets paid better. For Kroger to expect us to work harder... what a joke.

It's simple economics.  The economy is in piss poor shape right now that Kroger is having a hard time hiring people.  Anybody who has a job, even if they are still looking, is so thankful for that job that the company is going to push more work on them.  Because the employees are fearful of retaliation, the union doesn't get involved and can get away with it.

I haven't heard of the "Less is more" catchphrase either but it doesn't surprise me. 

Here is a roughly paraphrased quote from Dave Dillon during a conference call: "First we tried burning it, then we tried burying it, then we just gave away all the money we made last quarter"

Fifteen dollars and change isn't much money these days.  I have made a lot more than what I currently gross with Kroger.  I am college educated and a damn good worker for whoever decides to hire me.  I came to Kroger several years back settling for a fairly decent starting wage ($10.50/hr) and I proved myself so i got promoted to management.  Honestly with all the crap I endure I should of stayed out of managemnt and just earn the $13.40/hr.  i have thought numerous times over about stepping down and then I would really have some fun with the dumbass, lazy loosers who tink they are entitled to their job.  My family comes first in my life right now.  So that is why I do what I do.  Some day, when I am ready, I will pursue more diligently better career path for me but right now I am happy.

Does that sorta explain things Nocturna

 Kinda curious, since I remember you posting that you were hourly management, which is basically what department heads are.  The dept heads where I work are bid into by seniority.  There is no "proving of self", just depends on how long you've been there and if you want the headaches.  Is it different from zone to zone?

i guess so!  i work in cincinnati so like i said i came to kroger around 3 years ago.  i can not divulge my exact circumstances w/o giving up my "cover" but basiclly the cream rose to the top and i was asked if i wanted a promotion to backup.  at that time things were good so i accepted.  if i knew then what i know now i would reconsider.

I've been with the company for a little over two years now and make $9hr doing nightstock grocery. But hell other people on our nightcrew make like $7hr but we also get night premiums as well.
