I know the qualifications to go into management is that you have to either have a 2 year degree with a recommendation from your manager, a 4 year degree, or a department head with recommendation from your manager. Department head experience is a plus, but I don't know if it factors into your pay. Most of the managers I know are college graduates.
You would likely start out as a co-manager, most of which make generally around 37-40k a year. Depending on where you are at and if you get some breaks, it could take about 8-10 years as a co before you are promoted to a store manager.
Another thing to consider is that depending on the size of your zone, you could be placed a pretty far piece away. For example, if you live in Columbus, you could end up in Athens OH. If you are in the Mid Atlantic region, you could be from West Virginia and end up in Richmond, Va. Just depends on how far you want to relocate.
If you do the training, you are locked in for two years. You can't just up and quit because Wal-Mart offers more money or you will have to repay your training, which costs like 20 grand. Kroger was losing so many of its trainees to other companies that they had to put that into effect.

Yea but they do not expect (obviously) you to use it! Being a dumb ass coffee drinker is of utmost importance. You will get a special AssWhole-Leo costume and a cheap plaid tie if your a male. Females gotta wear a low cut showing their boobs every once and awhile. Memorizing the phrase "I dunno - i'll get back to you" then heading to hide in the office is practiced for months on end during your training.

I think anyone and everyone who wants to go into Kroger management should have to work as a regular employee in a store for at least a year, preferably in one of the more busy stores like the one I work in. It should be at least a year so they know what it's like to work during all the holidays. I've seen some managers come in and try to micromanage everything without having a clue as to how things really work in the real world. You can always tell when someone is new to management and has never actually worked in a store. They try to tell people who have been there for 10 years or more how to do their jobs. The best managers let employees do their jobs as they know best and only intervene when necessary.
One of the managers in our area pretty much has this answer when you go to him with a problem for the 30th time:
"Duh, well that's the first I've heard of that." "Oh well, I'm going to handle this the same way I handle everything else. I'm going to ignore it, take it before the Lord, and hope it goes away"
It doesn't really work that well when the bigwigs come in. He's LITERALLY spilling his guts in a trash can.
