Kroger Parking Lot Beggars
Permalink

This just happened a short time ago. . .

I had just parked and had made maybe twenty strides to the front door when I hear "Hey---excuse me, pleeeeese?" Across the way is an obese young black female standing next to a brand new Cadilac Escolade. Here's the following dialog:

Her: "I am NOT BEGGING----That's the first rule to say, right? But y'see, I got this "--and she shows me a Link card---"and it's loaded up with $200, but I caint get no gas with it, n I need $20. for gas, can you PLEEEEEEASE spare twenty dollas fo me?"

I seriously started laughing. I couldn't help it. I pointed to my 1993 Ford Tempo P.O.S., then to her Cadilac....then to her link card. "I have just enough money for myself, but I don't have EITHER of the things you got." She gives me a dismissive wave---"A'ight"--and lumbers back off.

Funny; just as I was pulling up, I saw a Latino man walking from the store to his car. At no point did she approach him. HMMMMM. . . .

Any one here with similar experiences?

I'm with you, Barada; I'm all heart to those truly in need.-----And I hope your situation improves soon. Keep your spirits up, and use ever resource you can. Good, decent people like you are what Public Assistance was designed for, should you need it.

To the OP. No reason to be nasty about it. Just say you can't afford to give up $20.

Show of hands here, please: who thinks it's ok to be on welfare AND be able to flash gangsta cash rolls for the things Link doesn't cover?

I made the mistake of helping someone once. I was doing daily markdowns in the dairy and this customer who was not dresed at to well and from my impression was on a very limited budget.  He asked me if I was making any close dated milk down because he needed it for his son.  I found a few quart bottles that were 2 days out and markdown them down.  He seemed grateful. Next weekend I saw him in again buying beer.

I think welfare should be for those who need it.  She obviously had the money, or else she wouldn't have had a brand new car to show for it (she just didn't think ahead to bring it with her).  I see nothing nasty or wrong about your refusal... actually I think it's kind of cool that you actually showed her that you didn't have as much as she had (maybe she'll think better of it next time).

Never ever do that.  First of all, you can get fired for marking down product that's not supposed to be marked down.  Second, if you do it one time they come to expect for you to do it for them every time.

woman like her make me just want to strike them in the face. she has such a nice car and a link card. she is going to hell. i even find it funny that she doesnt speak english. every time and ignorant black person talks i get so mad. simply because they are ruining our language and bringing down our schools test scores. she should be beaten for her self deserving attitude. she owes real americans some money and for her to fall off a cliff.
ps. she wasnt going to pay you back. you already knew this though.

first off you didnt pay attention.  I could have said no there isn't any milk to be mark down.  I went out of my way to look for milk(any size) that could be marked down according to store policy. I could not have been fired. Once he saw me the week later w/ beer in his cart he never askd me again.

She had a link card and an Escalade and she still needed gas money. And I'll bet the car was all blinged out. Makes you wonder where her money really went.

Had a woman one winter come up to me as I was leaving work and asked for $20 to buy a battery for her car.  Which was broke down at the other side of town.  She had walked so she could go to the Wal Mart across the road to get the battery.

Well first off $20 aint gonna get a battery for your car at Wal-Mart, even after the core charge for it.  And it was snowing kinda heavy and there were no tracks in the snow from the direction she was claiming to come from and hardly a flake of snow on her coat.  Needless to say, I told her no.

if they ask for 20 dollar bill which is the largest single bill most people have on them. they are scamming. if they instead ask for some help of some kind without mentioning money. give them a hand or a ride somewhere. otherwise dont give a scammer a cent of hard earned money.
i give krogerman77 a 1up for his smarts.

A scammer will also come up with the most outrageous stories like "Someone stole my car and all my money, and I need to feed my 5 kids, and there's no food in the house, etc., etc." A normal person will tell a more logical story, and probably won't ask for money, as there are many resources, besides money, that will help them. I also give krogerman77 credit for visually investigating the woman's story. She probably just came out of her nice warm car. :)

I've worked at many different stores and yes they all get it though the more influential stores get it more. And yes, they drive nicer cars than us and use excuses such as Link, my car broke down and baby needs to get home, I dont live her just need to get money for a bus, etc etc etc. But it works. If it didn't they wouldnt keep coming back. So who's more ignorant??

Ummm....(A), we the working tax payers who don't revolt for welfare reform: (B), the bleeding-heart brain deads who fall for these shameless beggar scams, (C), the spineless store managers who refuse to AGGRESSIVELY chase these bums off; (D) the occasional forum poster who seemingly defends welfare fraud and public begging---or (D)---which is my answer---

ALL THE ABOVE~~

and (E) the government officials, although we are in a deficit up to our eyeballs, won't even consider welfare reform as an option

Right, Cathy: they'll make great speeches about cutting costs on EVERYTHING else....but welfare is never even mentioned.

madman - i'm starting to like you!  i realize this is a very delicate / touchy subject but damn! i am sooo fricken' sick and tired of people bilking our system and not doing a damn bit of a "hard day of work".  And you wonder why this great nation of ours is so f'd up!  if i had any control of the matter, anybody who collected any form of government assistance would have to do some form of work.  Go down to Alabama and pull all the kudzo bushes down that are growing;  walk the interstate highways and pick up all the pieces of blown out truck tires; just any kind of small crap that would make this country better!  Hillarious....

<i must be bitter today  lmfao>

anyway...
i'm driving back from Alabama just the other day and pull into a gas station. I'm adding air to one of my tires when this young black lady in a car by the pumps yells over to me. i look over ( usually I just ignore people who do this as if i never heard them) and she asks me to come over (usually i wont come to them - thats physical exhersion on my part - rather they need to come to me if they want something right?)

she say something like, "we were heading somewhere and realized that we forgot to bring our wallets with us and now we do not have enough gas to get home." the man over there just gave us $10. are you able to give us $10 as well?"

I go "where are you heading to?"

she goes "back to Birmingham about 40 miles away"

I go "well great! that $10 you got should easily get you there. Best of luck"

and oh yea - her friend just walked out of the store moments earlier after buying a soda!!!!! dont think you can pour that into the tank can you

from what i have seen, these scammers usually have no idea of the value of money 10$ = 3 gallons at 3.3313 per gallon 3 gallons=40 miles at 13.3 miles a gallon. then assuming they get at least 13.3 mpg and then assuming they already have some gas still in the tank. they could easily go at least 40 miles. if she bought a soda at 1.49 and then had 8.51 asuming they still have at least 2/3 gallon in there tank and get at least 13.3 mpg. they could of easily made it home. if they scammed you for 10 more dollars they would have 20 - 1.49 soda 18.51 they would have been able to drive 80-120 miles. yet there home is only 40 miles away. if they drove a vehicle that got less than 8mpg then i would assume that they would easily need 5 gallons at 3.3313 per gallon which would cost 16.6613 still with there budget with assumptions they would not need your 10 dollars.
