Stopping Shoplifters!

I was working in the deli today and we noticed a guy eating a hotdog right there at the warmer where we keep them.  He's been doing this the last several days and we know he ain't been paying for them.

While I was preparing a dinner for one of the guys in the meat dept., he pointed out the guy eating a hotdog, and in turn I tell the deli dept. head who calls management.  And what do they do?  Nothing!  Said he wasn't going to talk to him about it!

The man in the Meat dept. asked what happened with the man, and when I told him, he said the same manager demanded to see the receipt for a pack of M&Ms one of the meat dept. guys had with him when he returned from lunch.  WTF!  Do they not care about making money?!

I'll be damned if I ever report another shoplifter at Kroger!  If management don't care why should I!?

In order to prove that you shoplifted something someone has to have seen you take the item off the shelf.  People take food and snacks into work for their breaks and lunches all the time.  Besides, if the M&Ms came from a vending machine there wouldn't be a receipt.

doesn't matter to management. i bought a dr pepper from the machine outside once, and management told me i had to get a supervior to put a paid sticker on it as proof i bought it.

at kroger you are guilty unless you can prove innocense

it isnt considered shoplifting until the customer leaves the store without paying, kroger policy is when they leave the store you cant follow them either. You also cant accuse them of stealing because they might have had every intention of paying, it would be bad customer service to accuse the customer. your hands are tied, only people trained to handle shoplifters can do so.

yeah according to kroger the employee accounts for 95% of theft, i seriously doubt that altogether. its more like 95% customers who steal and maybe 5% for employees.

Find out what time that customer usually comes in, and then take the hotdogs off the warmer right before he comes.

Next time try approching the customer and greeting them warmly. Ask them if they are finding everything ok. Ask them if you can help them with anything. Then pointedly stand there and engage him in conversation. This sort of thing makes shoplifters uncomfortable and they will usually go away.

If you have in store security, alert security when he comes in so that they can watch them. They can do something about shoplifters so long as they see them take the item, and maintain visual on them. Only when they head past the register and go toward the door, can the security guard stop them and make the arrest. There are a lot of things they have to do to validate a stop, so if you dont alert them as soon as you see the guy, the probably wont be able to do anything. If you saw him pick up the hot dog and start eating, that isnt good enough. The security guard has to see it from start to finish.

This is all to avoid lawsuits, of course.

crap... if the poor guy has to stand there eating a damn hot dog, just let him do it. some people just dont have the funds to get by. there once was this lady who came into out store every week and would walk the aisles for hours. she obviously was poor and would shove several things in her pocket. store management kinda caught on to her. instead of arresting her they decided to just welcome her into the store and give her a small bag of goodies that were going to be discarded anyways....

point is --- all the **** we toss down the dumpter we can definately allow some poor soul to munch on a nathan's hotdog LOL.

It's one thing to steal, but this is something to definitely think about...I know employees who have been low on funds just for a lunch. If they want to borrow a $1 from me for a hot dog or soda, I won't refuse them if they ask. Neither will I expect payment back right away either. The moral is...Be good to people, and you just might get back something more in return. And yeah, it does sicken me to see what gets thrown out...Anyone here see a disconnect?

 Amen.

This is an old post from over a year ago.  I remember it well and I still stick to what I said.  Todays world is a very sad pathetic place.  I must say I am not always proud to be here alive as a human when I look around and see some of the crap that is going on.  I've seen the elderly come into my store every single day and just walk around aimlessly and eat the samples that we have out.  There are employees who see this and go "OMG - there that ol' crusty looking man out there eating all the samples! Why does he do that"  then theres others who say "That poor old guy. He must be poor and living on a very fixed income if he has to do that"

Which one are you?

A few weeks later, you notice that the ol' man hasnt been showing up to do his daily sample walk any more.  You wonder why for a brief second and you go thru you shift.  Time passes and he still hasnt come around.  Occasionallly here and there you think about him.  Where is he?  Did he move?  Did he go south to florida for the winter?  You miss him is a odd sort of way.  Then news comes around that he passed away a few week back.  That explains things.  Now you wonder - who was that guy?  Did he have family?  Was he happy or sad for those last few months here on Earth.

Let people sorta eat those hotdogs or take a couple cookies.  But watch out for the ones who shove 10 cartons for Tide in the cart and push it out the door.
