Couple of interesting pieces in the most recent (Sept. 26) issue of Forbes magazine. One is titled "Social Power and the Coming Revolution..Why Employees and the Customers will be Calling the Shots". As I understand it, this relates to the current phenomenon of people using potent new technologies and social media to organize themselves, and forcing governments, agencies and corporations ( like Kroger) to listen to what ordinary people care about and to demand respect. For example, customers who don't like a product or have had bad service will quickly spread the word via internet, cell phone & facebook, potentially causing serious problems for a company. Also, prospective employees don't have to rely on the "party line propaganda" to find out what it's like to work at a company. They can quickly connect with current & past employees to get a more realistic view. Could all this affect Kroger...you bet...and it's already happening right here!
The second article, "Where the Jobs Are", charts several factiods regarding job opportunities by location, job title and type of business. One chart shows the top 10 companies that hired the most new employees over the past year...Kroger makes the list at No. 10. I suspect that Kroger's 4,000 new hires is a gross figure, not net, and I wonder how many employees have been fired, or retired or quit (probably in disgust).
