are the chef's assistants part of the deli staff? there is a remodeled store opening up next week that i am transferring to. i pretty much jumped thru a lot of hoops to go there. as far as seniority goes, i think i look pretty good. i won't be the early people - getting there at 7 am - which is perfectly fine with me. i think my start time will be around 9 am to 5pm (which would be great)
this place is loaded! there will be only boarshead and one person assigned to take the customer's orders. then one person who a customer can go to if they want personalized service. then a bunch of slicer people who will get orders on a computer screen from the employee who keys it in. they typical chicken cooker. then the chefs area. so here's the deal. i was a deli back-up and recently stepped down deliberately to go to this location. it is real close to my home. i got the seniority now but i can see it now that come january hours will be cut.
i can do any job in the deli (cept chef and manager) and i can put bread in bags / cookies on cookie sheets. so when the day comes that hours are cut, i need to swing into one of these positions if the cut line is around me. i sure as hell won't do night shift 5 days a week. so once again - are the chef assistants part of the deli?

They are at my deli. In fact, the deli people who work in the chef shop actually do most of the work. We only have one full time chef now and one assistant chef who only works 8 hours a week. At one time we had 3 chefs but they all left for greener pastures.
chefs fall under deli, but are bottom of the ladder, because they are "unnessisary" however, they tend to have pulll higher up, because management gets a warm and tingly over chefs, thinks they are something they are not.
Considering that most of the stuff that's in the chef case is pre-made, calling them chefs is a bit of a stretch. Most of the time it's open a bag of this. Add a bag of that. Add a bottle of that. Stir.
well.... they do make pot pies and crab cakes! oh and put sausage in some kind of meat and tie strings around it then cook it in a really hot oven.
anyways, the hot chef prepared meal area is pretty much dead with Kroger. it never took off so they are currently not adding it to any new or remodeled stores. customers just were not ready to buy to-go meals like that. plus the food looked like crap a couple hours after preparing it. who wants to pay primium dollar for dried out entrees? the Cincinnati Kenwood store (now closed for good) was the 1st store to try the chef's section. They had Italian Monday, Chinese Tuesday, Mexican Wednesday, etc. That did't fly so they just tried various entrees every day like pot roast, meat loaf, salmon, etc. I think they sold for $6.99 or $7.99 depending on what it was. then since no one bought it they gave out coupons. most of it was tossed out... what a shame.
