the way i understand it is if you have more seniority then other employees you can claim their shift(s). right?
so ok...
the schedule is written by the department head during the week then it gets posted by 3pm on friday. i can look at the schedule and if some one has -- say -- sunday off and i don't and that person has less seniority than me, i can go claim that off day and give them one of my shifts. right?
or ...
i could theoretically do this each and every day of the week if I choose to until I have my 'ideal schedule' for that week. soo.. if all the sudden i realize that my son needs me to go to his cub scouts meeting on wednesday i can change to have that time off. then if i want to go play golf on friday morning i can make the change. if i want a nightshift i could do that...

First of all, they have to schedule hours according to the needs of the business and the ability of the people scheduled to do the work. You can't just take hours away from another employee. However, if an employee is scheduled more hours than you and you have seniority then they have to give you the same number of hours. If you want to claim another employee's shift then that employee has to be given another shift with the same number of hours as originally scheduled. You also have to be able to do the work of the employee whose shift you're trying to snag. In other words, if you're just a bagger you can't claim hours on a checker even if they have less seniority than you do.
Why go to all that trouble? Just have your supervisor make out a dummy schedule each week with all the hours and shifts needed and then have the employees pick the shifts they want to work according to their seniority.
they have to be able to work it. keep in mind the 10hour layover requirement and if the other person has school or w/e. talk with the erson that is making your schedule to make changes. Also keep in mind that all objections to the schedule need to be given by saturday at noon.

senority comes into play only if a set numbers are aalible, the persion with the most senority gets to most, if they want them. they don't , thou , really get the PICK of WHEN the hours are.
that falls into the "all things being equal' stuation, with senority.
when all things are considered equal, senority rules, in shifts, dept placement, ect.
all management has to do, thou is say "bob is more qualified", and senority doesn't matter any more. now, by rights, management are SUPPOSSSED to give first pick to senior employees, but since management play favorites, it's hard to have that happen.
found all this out the hard way, when i tried to use senority to transfer depts, to get out of the trap i smelled coming.
