When I came to Kroger years ago, Sunday pay was double time. Some time later they changed it to time & a half. Like "BagBoy" stated, these were in the early contracts. They also, at one time, tried to make Sunday a "regular" work day.
Our contract in Portland is sorta silly. We do get paid extra for sundays, a whopping 65 cents an hour, so an extra WHOLE $5.20. Haha. Why even bother to include such a provision in the contract? I've heard from lots of old timers that Sunday used to be considered at least an overtime day. So it's still listed separately on your paycheck since it was at one time a pretty standard grocery industry thing to recieve extra pay for working on a Sunday.
i use to work with this lady who is a dept manager of the deli. she has 32 years in the company. she would work 6 hours every sunday just to pad her checking accout those extra dollars. i always thought what a shame b/c we could use the extra body instead of giving payroll dollars to 1 person in OT form.

Under the old contract, the work week was Monday-Saturday with ONE day off. Stores weren't open on Sundays. So everybody was off on that day. When stores started opening on Sundays they had to start paying overtime because Sunday wasn't considered to be a regular workday. If you didn't want to work on Sunday you didn't have to unless it was absolutely necessary. Those who did want to work on Sundays would put their names on a list and the names would be rotated each week to make it fair. That way the same people wouldn't be working on Sunday and receiving overtime each week. It also used to be that if you were going for full time you had to work 12 weeks at 40 hours a week and Sundays didn't count towards your hours. My former department manager is under the old contract. She usually only gets one day off during the week and Sundays are always overtime whether she works 40 hours the rest of the week or not.
i get paid an extra dollar per hour for sundays :) not much but hey, dollar is a dollar!
and there are some people in my store who are under the old contracts that guarantee them to work 6 days per week. They get 1 day of overtime pay, and I'm not sure if it's counted as their sunday or if they have their sunday overtime and then their 6th day overtime. Either way, they make a lot more than even management. However, some people who are under this contract choose not to work sundays and choose not to work 6 days. I can't blame them though, who wants to work 6 days per week at kroger every week for 30+ years?? lol.
