Utility People
Permalink

I am a Utility person at my store. I know some people will look down on me. Before you start I am partly disabled I will not go into details about that though. I have been st Kroget almost 18 years bagged for 10 years. But anyway at my store most of the time I heard we only have 1 utility person at a time. We are non union. It seems like this job would be easy but really it's not. They way they do me. Always calling me here and there. I know2 it's my job. But the thing is 1 utility person and having to check the womens restroom sometimes is a pain. You cannot get in there to check it. I never close it unless it is something really really bad. I do not want to close it because I know how it is when someone has to go. But this can be a crazy job at times. One day a few weeks ago on a Wednesday some old man came in and had Sh*t himself. He came in like that. He went strait to the restroom but the bad thing is he left a trail. It was awful I mean really awful. I am sure he could not help doing that but why did he go in? Well guess who had to clean it up? Me and only me. Yes that's my job but someone could have helped? I wa strying to clean the restroom and they kelp calling me up front to where the trail started. About 5 employees puked. My point on all this is they seem to think only I can do clean ups with us being non union. Even is a simple grape is on the floor up front they call me even when there is a bagger standing with his hands in his pocket. I may be doing something more important like a store sweep so a customer will not fall. I get called alot to bag. If I have to bag why can't a bag boy do a simple clean up? This gets rediculas sometimes. There is nothing I wish more than to get a real job but like I said I am disabled and cannot work full time. Atleast I am working and not sitting on my butt at home all the time.

Oh and BTW I was given a shinning star for cleaning up after that old man. If I when $500.00 for this I will share it with everyone. I will then say it was worth it.

Well from what I hear they are a few stores that are non union. I guess that's why there is so much load on me. I am expected to do more than I can handel on my shift. And that's why I am the only utility clerk at a time I mean either 6am til 2 pm is how it's done in the morning and then one 2pm til 7pm. I heard other stores have 2 or 3 at a time and that utility people are required to do lot dutie (bring in carts) Like I said in my other post I do that also and bag but I am the only one who can clean up a spill.

Utility is an easy job. You can chill in the restrooms until you get called to the front. Way easier than always being in the front. Also you can sit down if you do store cleanups.

Paper towels and spray to pick up the mess. How are you going to do that while standing up? Seriously, it is the easiest job in the store as you can basically disappear at times and no one cares until a spill happens.

Well if you are still young you may be able to get down on the floor on your knees or sit down or whatever. But older people like me hurt sometimes I have arthritis in my legs feet and knees. So when you get to the age you have arthritis try sitting on the floor. I could go on but I will not. All I would be doing is feeding the Troll.

Well for those that function normally, utilities should be an easy job. The worst thing is if they want you in the front all the time. Which means, you are basically a bagger/checker. Which puts you an equal to them.

I could NEVER imagine working at Kroger, or utilities, for more than I already have (nearly 2 years on through college). As soon as I get my Web Development degree, I'm outta there for good and not lookin' back. Courtesy Clerk is an extremely easy position because really nothing is expected of you. It's the easiest money I've ever made (which is really the only reason I continue to work there). The main issue I have with this job is that the work is very repetitive, boring, and nobody cares. However, I do like the fact that mgt. has been very flexible with my class schedule every semester, so I can't complain too much. And I always enjoy the free food in the break room, Associate Appreciation Weekends, Sunday Pay, and occasional raises.

I want to wish you alot of luck bagboy89. I am good with computers and have added memory and harddrives and even taken one apart and put back toghther thats basicly like building one. So basicly I could make a living doing it. What held me back I tried tech school but failed the math getting in I am bad at math I am a slow learner and I seem to stress alot. But I wanted to get certifed but the math was what kelp me. That was in 2006. I would be through it by now if I would have stayed with it.

I WANT to be the utility guy.  **** our utility guy hasn't even worked there a year yet and he gets all early shifts. I've been there almost a decade and get worse shifts and have to do a lot more backbreaking work

there is no compensation in the world that kroger could pay me in order to clean up feces or any other bodily excretions.  this is BIO-HAZARDS. no one should touch this, be forced to touch this or even think about it WITH OUT PROPER TRAINING. some poor sap who gets paid min wage should not have to loose their dignity to clean up messes like this.

sorry.. stuff like this burns me. bleh

bty, just taking a bottle of sanitizer and a box of brawny towels to clean up this mess trailing down the store's aisles is quite inefficient. this area should be blocked off and a haz-mat sqaud in full "poop -proof' gear called in to sanitize the area!

Bagging/Checking are the most tedious jobs. Utility might be the most disgusting job but it is a lot less stressful than to be at the front all the time.

Atlantadivision, I personally applaud you. I know that doesn't mean much; I certainly can't give you the job recognition you deserve. But I wish I had at least one of my staff with the clearly stated work ethic you have, and with one tenth the amount of non-ego centered bull**** you display.

You just keep on doing what you're doing, and let nobody and nothing keep your spirit down~

I'd say the reason is, that very few people have common sense these days.

-__- of course its easy when you do nothing and wait for calls (lazy people)... its called work bro not chill.. when you REALLY work you will see that it is not "easy" as you say. "There is nothing else to clean." There is always work to be done!
