I work part time in the meat dept at krogers..for the last two weeks they have given me no hours/ does the union protect me to at least get some hours?
Check you contract book. Under my contract, unless you have any restrictions on what hours you can work, they have to give you at least 12 hours. Also, I'm not sure if hour restrictions apply here, but they can't give anyone with less seniority more hours than you have.
Wow, 0 hours? Especially right now during the Holidays, peeps here are getting more hours than they want, seriously. But we'd rather do that for a month or so than hire a new person to take those unwanted shifts, and then have to either let them go after the holidays or have everyones hours reduced to minimum.
We also have minimum status in our contract. Everyone is a "PT 20" or "PT 12" or what have you, and you must be given that many hours every week at minimum. Additional hours are given by seniority. Only if theres too many employees would the least senior employee be reduced.
They may be working on the "availability" part. If you arent 100% available whenever, they can say that they dont have any hours available on the shifts you are available for. However there should be some minimum statuses in your contract, i'd definiteley get your union rep on it.
I have also gotten two weeks in a row with 0 hours, I have stated on my application and in the initial interview when I am available to work. Does 0 hours necessarily mean they are trying to get me to quit?
you may take the shifts of anyone that is scheduled that has less seniority than you. It is called bumping. In our local it has to be done by noon on saturday
I don't understand how you can have 0 hours. I used to work as a part timer in the meat department for 2 years, and whenever November rolled around, I'd always be getting 30+ hours, sometimes even 40 at least through Christmas. One thing I've learned about Kroger, is you need to be very vocal about scheduling issues. Don't let them push it aside, get it resolved. If they can't even get you an answer, talk to the union.
