What is your view on working Christmas Eve/Day? Me personally, I would NEVER work those days, even for time and a half. Family and friends come first in my book around the holidays, no matter what the job. I'm certainly not going to be 'doing time' at Kroger of all places, being the worst.

Wally is closed on Christmas too....but this year we're trying something new: staying open 'til 10 on Xmas eve. Last year it was 9....tho from 7 on we were dead in the water. And guess which one of the managers gets to close this year? Yep, lucky moi~
at fredmeyer we are closed on Christmas day, and close at 6pm on Christmas eve. In the Eugene area contract they had inserted a voluntary Christmas opening clause. Stores were open on Christmas, but all hourly employees were on voluntary basis only. This creates a huge problem. "Somebody" has to show up to operate the store beyond the salaried management, so there was a lot of browbeating and demanding that someone show up from each department. Luckily that wasn't at FredMeyer, Albertsons and Safeway are under the same contract and they did that. We luckily remain totally closed on Christmas and our division office has said they dont plan to change that. I never work on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Hanging out with family is way more important, and stores just shouldnt be open so the employees can do the same.
I work in Southern WV and we close at 6. But this week and from what I hear next week, we have been keeping people in the deli until 11pm. Dunno why, since we normally close the deli at 10 and rarely have anyone oafter 8:30. Just worked that shift tonight and a total of one customer between 7:30 and 11.
Mid-Atlantic stores close at 6p.m. on Christmas Eve, and are closed Christmas Day. I see where the people that don't agree with working on those days are coming from, but I don't mind working. You are going to have last-minute shoppers, and I'm glad I can be there to help.

yea here is Cincinnati - we close xmas eve at 6pm + closed all day xmas. it would be totally absurd to open up on xmas. have you ever driven around on xmas? the city is totally quite! if kroger ever decided to open on that day + seek volunteers - i would tell them where to start their seach!

I remember those days. In Central we close at 6pm, but closing time for me whenever I closed was always 5 minutes before hand. It helped give a cushion for those lat few "Just need a few things" folks. We always did have to check on the store Christmas Day in management, but we just split up the day. Last year I did the 6am check and was back home in bed by 7:15. This year is going to be different because the new job is open 24-7-365, and I am slated to do the Christmas Eve overnight shift (6p-6a). But, I get paid double for it, even as a salaried manager so it makes it worth it. Sometimes you have to sacrifice a little to keep the heat on and the mortgage paid.

If they don't have what they need before the store closes on Christmas Eve then they have no one to blame but themselves and will just have to do without.
I agree.last minute shoppers are the worst.they keep you there 10 minutes after store close cause they wanna "buy more things"I could care less what they wanna buy. It's family and friends day and I'd rather not spend it at kroger.not even for 5 hours
Our stores nightshift is taking volunteers to come in on Christmas night to condition the stores and so far only one person has volunteered. If that is so can they actually retract the request for volunteers and make it mandatory that people have to show up?

From what I remember (at least from our contract), if they don't get sufficient volunteers to fill the slots they need, then the schedule for those shifts are filled in reverse seniority untill all shifts are filled. So they schedule all of the new folks first until they fill the slots, maybe the night shift second man because they'll have keys. But if it's just conditioning, I always just scheduled two of our guys to come in and do it. At my last store, they could condtion the whole store and run a little backstock in 8 hours flat. Unless you are in a huge store, I wouldn't sweat it much.

We close at 5:00 on Christmas Eve and everybody has to be out of the store by 5:30.
Good luck with that.
I've worked there for nearly 25 years and I've never had to work on Christmas Eve past 3 o'clock, but I've been told that around 4:30 the managers start going around rounding up the customers telling them to finish their shopping. They lock the doors at 5:00. Any customer who isn't out the door before 5:30 on Christmas Eve is simply wasting time and being inconsiderate.
