We don't have any at all. I guess it really depends on the store. The worst we ever had was when a front end clerk got cought stealing damaged beer from the cage.
We don't have anyone monitoring the front, half the time most of the people who steal take the stuff out of the package before the alarms go off.

when i started, employees were the main security, and i was the unofficial head, because i been a bouncer, and a pro=wrestler.

with management always hiding upstairs, unable, and unwilling to come down, or shopplifting, and other crimes, went so throu the roof, we ended up on the news !
1 attempted kindaping, two armed robberies, two violent assualts, a purse snatching, a little boy molseted,and a hostage situation with a customer forced to withdraw money from the ATM at gun point.
so kroger hired a unarmed rent a cop, put cameras everywhere, security scanners at the doors, and blocked off one door way all together.
major crimes slacked off, only One armed robbery, and One attempted, but shoplifting staied real bad.
coperate decided the rent a cop wasn't worth the money, and aded even more camers, cut down our entrance/exits to ONE, which got us in trouble with fire dept, but kroger bought them off, and the doors staid permantly closed, and blocked.
We sat right on the county line, so cops never came in our area, and crooks knew it.

I live and work in central Il. As best I understand, the whole approach here to 'asset protection' is a poorly played game, at best. Much of what hinders good crime prevention lies in legal red tape; everything has become a liability, and everyone is afraid to actually DO anything. Sure, we have people who are professionally trained (in some cases off-duty cops) to work in AP....But the rules and regs as to what they are allowed to do are so ridiculously stacked against them, it's a constant turn-over in staff.
I miss the days when some burly guy could chase down the perp and tackle his ass to the pavement. It's no coincidence that retail theft (and other retail centered crimes) have spiked since those days ended.
My store use to have a off duty city cop a few days a week, and a off duty deputy on the weekend. But since our liquor was moved into a room in front of the store we have know security whatsoever. That's mainly because the city cop got a job out of town. And when the deputy was injured in a wreck he was never replaced.
If your gonna shoplift do it at Kroger it would seem!
Theft is a serious problem at the location where Im employed.......there are many digital hd real time cameras and a few part-time retired law enforcement people.....as well as the staff......however the most productive deterent to theft is a zero tolerance 100% prosecution policy for any item that is taken....period
We USE to have security personnel. Until one day a shoplifter fought back being apprehended. He struck out guard and bloodied his nose. The guard on turn, blacked the perp's eye, busted his nose, and knocked 3 teeth out. The perp was a mess. Corporate heard about it and got rid of our security, so no one would file a lawsuit. HA!! Corporate ideas are "the best" are they not??
A few days ago I swear I saw someone with something stuffed in his jacket. It just looked so damn suspicious. I told the manager that I saw this but I don't think he seemed interested. Oh well, I tried.
Also, we have plainclothes LP from time to time. They mostly try to get shoplifters. They got one the other day. There were actually police called and everything. I was shocked, as they are usually completely ineffective.
Every now and then we get an LP guy from corporate. He spends most of the day hassling employees for receipts, and making sure employees log in and out of SCO properly.
