So today the Atlanta Human Resource office said anarchy is the way. You can take anyones hours that has less senority as long as they have 12, because if you have under 12, kroger has to still pay that person 12. I still don't have hard facts, but you would think that someone around corporate level wouldn't be assinine. So with this 20 front end positions are going to turn into 5 fulltime positions and 15 people are going to quit. Hopefully the week before thanksgiving. So senor bag boys get to bagging and roll some hours. Has anyone ever heard of a bag boy with full time. How many cashier are going to be a bagger. At the begining i was hopeing this was wrong, but now I'm hopeing on this way, because you can be full time and do not have to ask for it. YOU JUST TAKE IT!!!!!
If this is truely in the new Union Contract, then Kroger screwed themselves because this will fall apart.
In the local 700 contract, you could take the hours of a less senior employee but there were some weird caveats. If you were grandfathered (hired before some date in 1988) you could bump hours by the day up to 40 hours if you were full time. If you were hired after that date, you could bump hours but only by the week. So if you had 32 hours and someone below you had 36 hours, you could ump for those hours but only if you took their entire schedule and they got yours. Really f'ed up, if you ask me. The worst was my shop steward who would bump people by the day in other departments because they had a better schedule than he did. I left before I found out how that resolved itself.

The hell with the union contract, we are all here to do a job for Kroger co. Now that hillbilly union is in our Way. This senority $hit has to Go. Thats whats wrong with the depts now and decades of draging part time labor through senority CRAPOLA. Get this picture, you have a new hire that is WELL experiened hired in with all the wisdom and experience of running a job app thats posted by time clock, he/she applys for such posting, And now some ding bat b-itch applys knows nothing about dept, and through senority gets the dam job, now they drag down dept. Because she dont know a ****en thing about running the new dept job, all in the name of senority. Cost Kroger Co millions over time and that time is running OUT. Us part timers are jumping ship because of senority for jobs that are given out on work performance not senority. Have fun and good day
Well, that doesn't make a bit of sense. So if a person rolls five people for their hours does that mean that that person is going to do the work of five people? If you did that you would be short on help. I can just see one person trying to run an entire department because he/she rolled everyone else's hours and there weren't enough hours left in the budget to schedule anyone else.
II didn't say I liked the way it was done, but that was the contract the union agreed to. An for those unfamiliar with the concept, when shifts are bumped you are switching shifts or taking them) n such a way that you still having the same number of people.

We have such provisions in our contract out here, but they aren't really followed. Also our management just doesnt seem to be that...dickish?
Good example. My department has 7 employees. 3 full time, 4 part time. We have about 220 hours to spread around. so the 3 fulltimers have 120 hours, and the next 100 is spread out amongst part-timers who have certain availability, etc. One guy gets a bit over 30 hours and the rest a bit over 20.
Nobody really claims anyone elses hours ever. We do have seniority provisions, and they're adhered to usually. If someone is PT20, they get 20 hours. if you're FT40, you get 40 hours. period, full stop. Otherwise it's a violation unless the person involved requested it.
As for the weird seniority job postings, thats odd. Nobody at FredMeyer seems to get a job due to seniority only. Lets say there was a posting for a seafood manager. Someone from produce couldn't apply for it and expect to have a chance, the job requirements require 2-3 years of meat/seafood experience and good fish cutting skills. If you cant do that, no dice. Doesnt matter if they have 15 years seniority. Now if two seafood clerks apply, one with a lot of experience and one not, then obviously the experienced guy might be the favorite, but that makes sense.
Really weird that someone could seemingly do a terrible job, but just somehow hang around, and get management spots just because they have managed not to be fired over someone who might be new but has proper experience. Maybe thats why FredMeyer is pretty much the highest performing KMA....

I think some stores must have really lousy contracts. I work in the Mid South division and job postings are determined by experience first and seniority second, as it should be. Also, you can't just take someone's hours. If you request a certain schedule or a certain day off and you don't get it and someone else who can do your job but has less seniority does get it then you can complain and file a grievance. Otherwise, you work the schedule you're given. You can't have employees basically writing their own schedules, no matter how long they've worked for Kroger.
