Cell phone for Emergency use (Sick Family members)

First I want to say I have worked for Kroger for 18 years. I do keep my cellphone in my pocket. Why for emergencies. Both my paraents are sick. My mother suffers from depression and my father fell a few weeks ago and hurt his ribs really bad. I really need to keep my phone on me. I am not like some people who will constantly text for no reason while on the clock. But anyway back in 2009 my mother was really sick she had some surgery some woman thing. Anyway she was like in a coma for like a month. Something went wrong in the surgery. But her mind has not been right sience then. She has been a little better until my dad fell and it made her depression worse. I am on vacation this week. I feel I should talk with my manager about this and see if it's ok for me to keep my phone on just incase they need me. This fall my dad had has made his lungs worse. He is on Oxegen. One night llastweek he was telling my mother things she needs to do while he was having a hard time breathing. In other words he thought he was going then. I have gone on enough I just want suggestions what can I do? Can they say anything too me if I keep it on for Emergency? Yes my mother knows the store number. But it may be easier for her to reach me on my cell.

Have you tried explaining that to your mgmt and asking them if it's ok?

One of my store managers told me that family comes first.

One of the few managers I actually liked.

I will try that. There should be no problems because they know I always do my job and never give them problems.

I'd go with this one first. Then, IF it becomes a problem, tell them your situation and ask if it's ok.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission~

managers should have some empathy in them - especially for circumstances like yours. i would just tell them the situation like it is. your parents are people! they need your help.

Everybody except for you has their cell phones on vibrate anyways.

The damn courtesy clerks play with their cell phones all the time.  It should be ok to have yours on vibrate, and especially considering how important it is.  Who would even know?

It's not like management is going around conducting cell phone checks.  Or at least, I hope it isn't.

Your parents are more important than some stupid grocery store job.  I don't really see you getting in trouble for attending to your dying parents.  And if you do, it would be worth it.

In my store people walk around on their cell phones constantly...talking, texting...dept heads, backups...you name it. I'm not joking. I think it's awful not to mention unprofessional, but it seems like no one cares so it goes on with no one even raising an eyebrow. My cell stays on vibrate in my pocket unless I'm off the clock. I figure one day the crap will hit the fan if corporate walks in and sees it.

My spouse & I have just one phone...a cell phone...which functions as our household phone.  I don't carry it with me to work....it stays at home or, when we are out & about together it comes along in pocket or purse.  I can't see any sense in having a cell phone with me at work...I'm there to work after all.  In case of emergency my store has at least 4 phone lines...never had any problem with anyone getting in touch with me for emergencies.  Maybe I just work too hard but I'm sure that a cell phone in my pocket or hanging off my belt would get damaged in no time.  When you see people talking on their cell phones while driving, jogging, shopping (not paying a bit of attention to the other shopper around them)....I've heard people carrying on conversation while taking a dump in the store restrooms....well, is there any doubt that people have become obsessed with cell phones.   Wonder what would happen if the entire cell network went off-line for about an hour some day...some would think the end of days was at hand.  Wouldn't bother me a bit...just laugh my ass off.  Hope all you cell phone junkies hit bottom soon and start the  long road jto recovery from your addiction!

I'm with you on that one!  My boss is on hers constantly, and if they can't reach her on the cell, they call the store because they can't take a crap without telling her about it!
