Taking time off

My daughter called in today after getting a call from my doctor saying that I am going in for surgery Monday.. it is nearly a weeks notice. The woman she talked to gave her a lecture about "we just go tthe call" excuses, told her she was reducing her hours and that she needed to find another employee to cover her hours if she needed them off that it wasnt her responsibility to keep changing the schedule.

Is this normal operating procedures?

It's kind of low ball, but it doesn't surprise me.  Tell your daughter to go in and have a conversation w/ her store manager, letting them know my mom/dad is having surgery and I need to be with them.  Most managers w/ a ounce of common sense, (I know there are several out there w/ none or less) will say ok be w/ your family. It's only a day or two right?  The store will function without them fine.

well now supposedly these kind of mean-spirited bosses are all being weeded out but the HR and upper mgmt have a hundred miles to go. they work in a far removed world from the actual front line happenings. was this person one of the managers or just one of the front end bosses like the head cashier?

either way i'm sure you're not the only one being treated wrong or verbally abused- I wonder if it was that person's parent if they would've even had to request the time off- prolly not!

u go to ur mgr and they will not be pleasant because you're reporting on one of their dept. mgrs that they count on to handle all the issues like this. in theory they should be thanking you for giving them that much notice but in reality they are berating you for causing them to schedule around ur sincere need. And they wonder why turnover is so high!!! sounds like a hostile work environment- call that 1-800 number and talk to them about how you were treated!

Sounds like he's trying to cover his butt and the gal that berated her. At this point the spin is being put upon your daughter saying she didn't communicate clearly. No matter the outcome she's now on their "hit" list. Unless your daughter has an attendance or performance problem then ur just dealing with a manager with inflated ego (most of em have one or will) and even though in theory they have weeded out these "power trip" managers in reality most of the worst ones are still around and thriving because they have learned how to talk a good line to their bosses and change like a chameleon to appear like a nice, caring leader when needed.

BUT, like they say on American Pickers: U can Put Lipstick on a Pig, But It's Still a PIG! Now that she's had her eyes opened about this job she knows what environment to avoid when looking for a new employer. I wouldn't want or let my kids work for em... sellin hamburgers or making pizzas would prolly be a stepup now.

A doctor note is usually you need if something like that comes up. The managers love to be pricks though.
