now i collect all markdowns take them to the back and tag them there, doing this on the salesfloor results in me getting mobbed by little old ladies. i think this is related to the 'extreme coupon' phenomenon, people scrambling to save pennies on the dollar for crap they wouldn't normally buy. you can put a manager special sticker on literally anything and they'll buy it, even the most rotten old ass sh1t

I hate the markdown program. I'd rather produce less product and have the shelves be a little less full than to have to mark down entire shelves of breads and cakes. Today I saw a woman at the bakery counter and asked her if she needed any help. She said she was waiting for somebody to mark down the cake she had her eye on. She literally stood guard over that cake for a good 45 minutes.
Some people are fantastically cheap...we get folks all the time demanding discounts on our spoiled produce we're throwing away. WHY would they want spoiled food??
I've had people fuss at me when they see me throwing out the day old donuts. I want to tell them, "Look, they're not your donuts. If Kroger wants to throw them away, then that's their choice."
yeah. i always loved throwing out the out of day chickens, and having people lecture me about how "that's such a sin, with all the hungry people. say, are you gonna give me a discount on one of those"
waste and spoilage is a big BIG BIIIIIGGGG problem at most all Kroger stores. over ordering and over producing is the name of the game. i just witnessed tossing out over $500 of boars head product yesterday - i was so pissed off. you get so complacent after awhile knowing that crap is going ino the dumpster and not into the shopping basket. every damn day we got the same morons in the deli cranking out way too much chicken; preping up way too many party trays, sandwiches, cold chicken, you name it; cooking extra soup and them $1.99 chicken or fish sandwiches just because they dont understand or give a rat's ass. roto chickens tossed on the rack out of proportion to what they're gonna sell. butt ends of deli meats and cheeses tossed into the trash that you can easily squeeze out and extra 5 or 6 slices. hellman's mayonaise jars not scraped clean. mac n' cheese or mashed potato bags not squeezed fully out. extra stouffer entrees cooked only to sit in the warmer all day then tosses into the garbage. full sheet trays of chicken or salmon or a chefs item burnt in the oven then pitched without any repocussions.
it is totally CRAZY how much crap is pitched compaired to what is sold - sometimes i wonder what the ratio really is! then no body ever EVER is held accounntable. if it was my product at my grocery store - i would give a crap! then i would train them morons to be very careful with the product or they're be finding their asses on the curb along with the trash.
thanks for boiling my blood upp so damn earlly in the morning.....
well.. don't let em stress u out too much- like the one gal said- it ain't my money! U and I both know if we ran our own small business we would go bankrupt operating like they do. But that just shows u what happens when the 8 layers of upper mgmt. force the one size fits all mandate on every store. It also shows u how much markup they have to constantly throw away that much food just to meet some pencil pusher's mdsg. plan.
Common sense disappears when ur micro-managed by general office. Ur problem is that u care too much and unlike ur non-caring coworkers you hate to waste food even if its because of over production or company policies. U can try and dumb urself down to fit in but u'll most likely become more and more bitter- life's too short- seek out a job where employee ideas/comments aren't frowned upon and smart work is rewarded.
Hey I admit I love markdowns. I will buy stuff I mark down in the bakery all the time. Why pay $7.99 for a pie when you can get it for $3.99? I also think it's stupid how we throw away so many donuts. Some nights we have 9-10 dozen left and i know all of those don't sell by the morning. It's just a big waste.
I work in the deli and last night our deli/bakery manager was closing the bakery. About an 30 minutes after she left for the night I noticed she didn't take down the donuts or mark them down.
I bet she won't get in trouble for that but let anyone else do it and there will be hell to pay.

At my store they have stopped markdowns in the deli by anyone other than the deli manager under the excuse "You're marking down too much stuff" when they are doing exactly as they were told!
