The downfall of Kroger
Permalink

Its going to happen because of a simple model they use to fuel their stores. They're banking and relying that part time employees is a more effective model than full time employees. The thing about part time employees is they're more likely to call in on the weekends than a full time employee. I heard a manager tell me yesterday she had alot of people call in at work. I believe in the end when they reduce full time employees and have more part time employees they won't have the manpower to stock our stores. I'd hate to think what will happen when HEB comes into the area and they find out that they pay alot more than what Kroger currently pays. What will happen when their full time employees start leaving for a pay raise?

Good points. I'm seeing a LOT more Kroger salaried managers hustling the freight now, including on over nights. After all, they are salaried; no concerns about over time for them.

We had a comanager working 12 hours a day OVERNIGHT because 3 - 4 people on the grocery crew quit a few days apart.

WOW, that's rough!---Not that they likely get much sympathy, what with them being the harbingers of all this part-time crap in the first place.

A part time employee is not going to be as dedicated, loyal, or dependable as a full timer, because why should they be ?

they have no "stock" to loose, by loosing the job.

full timers need the job, part timers may or may not want the job.

using part timers to staff a store, is no different then using the army reserves to be the main military force.

just doesn't work

Barada, my seriously biggest head ache is the turn over rate we have to deal with at my store. In my years there, this has grown to epic proportions.

And that was a good analagy, re the armed forces: this part-time crap has been affecting even THEM.

On behalf of the downfall of Kroger, Key Retailing is definitely the making us go downhill.

So true.  At our store they're pushing for this to the extreme.  We got a ton of part-timers who don't do anything.  I'm really the only full timer who pushes to get out of there along with extra work and the other just wastes time on one isle the whole night.  Overtime is cool, but sometimes I wanna' go home on time and out of there.

Today we had four callouts on the front end.

It really sucked for the rest of us.

But I don't blame them.  It's not a real job, so it would be foolish it to treat it like one.

Our turnover rate is also crazy high.  But that's getting back to the "real job" thing.

Kroger isn't going to do anything until it starts impacting sales, at which point they are going to enact some more half-baked technological "solutions".
