So anyway, I was wondering, when someone voluntarily switches departments, they go on the bottom of the list senority wise for the new department they chose to go to, no matter how long they've been with the company, right? That's normally what happens at my store anyway unless they're forced to switch departments. This happened to me, I'd be thrown back and forth between departments without being told and then end up being forced to do the work of both departments the same day, but I always kept my senority.
Now I'm back to being a cashier again and just recently there was a transfer, a woman from the bakery, an older foreign woman, decided she wanted to become a cashier. She was in the bakery for like 5-6 years, never used a register before. She can barely keep up. She's not doing all that well. I think it's horribly unfair that she's on the first page senority wise, when she chose to become a cashier. It's not fair to everyone else either. She should be below me. Should I complain to my store manager? Do you think anything could be done about this?

Wrong, at least it's not that way in the Mid South division. A person's seniority doesn't change from department to department, nor from store to store. In my division your seniority date is the date you became full time or if you're part time, the date you were hired. That does not change. You have seniority over everyone whose date of seniority comes after yours. It doesn't matter if you've switched departments or switched stores. Now when you first switch, your name may be at the bottom of the schedule but doesn't mean you're at the bottom of the seniority list.
I'm a utility clerk for krogers and next week my job title is being changed to clerk so that I can run a register. I was just told the other day that while being put on the cashiers schedule list for next week that my name is at the bottom of the list and that I'll start out with the least seniority even though I've been there for a year and a half. I have more seniority than quite a few cashiers but all that is going to disappear?
Kroger and some of it's managerial staff try to play off of the naivety / stupidity of it's employees!
If I was to say that the world is flat; we never went to the moon or that there are alien beings walking around Earth and President Obama is one of them, would you necessarily believe me? Just because some one tells you one thing, it doesn't mean that it is correct or true. Only until you investigate their claim and know for a fact that it is incorrect then call them on it, you are just pretty much agreeing with them or too dumb to care to challenge their claim!
Don't let people push you around. Don't be some one else's fool. Don't give in to those who try to take advantage of your weaknesses. Do challenge those who lie to you. Do fight for your rights. Do understand that you are equal to every one else and therefore entitled to what you have justly earned.
As far as the bakery lady who worked 5-6 years as a baker then she wanted to become a cashier - hey she has 5 years in with Kroger! SHE HAS SENORITY regardless of how well she is performing right now as a cashier. Have you tried to help her or have you pretty much felt bitterness towards her and turned you back. One day too, you will have years upon years of senority. It's a reward FOR STICKING WITH YOUR EMPLOYER FOR A LONG TIME rather than job hopping. Another reward is getting 3 weeks of vacation time after working so many years.
Damn people.... don't let others pust you around. Just b/c you are a utility clerk then trasnferred to cashier you all the sudden go to the bottom of the list! THATS INSANE!!! Let them say what they want then when they post the schedule on Friday, go claim hours based on your senority AND DON'T BACK DOWN! We'll see who wins then.....

btw - i'm not mad at you are calling you stupid or wutever I am merely trying to light a fire under anyone's ass who allowed others to walk over them w/o putting up a fight. I am so sick of that sh*t. Kroger does have (unfortunately) a bunch of moron employees who are just so willing to allow the higher-ups say and do whatever to them. I wish more and more people would stand up for themselves.

Seniority is hilarious. All the cashiers who were hired after me tend to quit since they don't get enough hours to pay bills, so somehow we ended up bringing in a bunch of transfers from other stores. All of whom had years and years of seniority.
Now, my relative seniority is actually lower than when I started.
