Ok... I am a Helper Clerk with 10 months under my belt with the company.

5 weeks ago my manager hired 2 helper clerks. After 2 weeks both were sent to checker school. One wasnt able to go but the other was sent to checker school 2 weeks AFTER he was hired.

I was not consulted about this, even tho I was asked months prior to them being hired, if i wanted to go.

I think my manager wrongly promoted someone with no seniority over me to a position that should be mine.

Am I wrong?  Shouldnt he have asked me first? Is this considered leap frogging and against policy?

What are Helper Clerks? Are you referring to baggers? What is a checker school? You have to go to school to be a checker?

Yes, it does matter.  It makes a person appear less intelligent when they don't phrase something correctly or use proper grammar.

Go to your manager or store director and show them your concern in a polite way and ask if you can be a cashier. Let us know what he or she says. Good luck!

yes - just go to the store manager and let them know that you understand there is a class coming up and you would be thrilled and honored to go as well!  i cant be that hard to do.  do they realize they skipped over you or are you just venting and upsset w/o really knowing.

probably the people who got hired are friends with someone already in the company, just like any other workplace in america, you'll have to deal with that sort of thing happening. it's all about who you know after all..

You may exercise your seniority over new hires. If they are hiring clerks and you are interested in a Clerk position they have to give you a spot. You will lose all your seniority since it's considered a promotion. You will have two seniority dates. Your date of hire which will be used for vacation purposes and pay raises and your new position start date which will be used for scheduling purposes.

A checker must be able to remember PLU's, identify produce on sight, be able to engage with the customer all while ringing up their purchases. Not all baggers can be checkers. You need to be honest and ask yourself why you were not chosen to be a checker. Do you have the memory of a gnat? Are you late all the time? Do you stay on task even if nobody is watching you? Do you have poor social skills? Poor grooming or hygene?
