I like working at kroger. Nice people (for the most part) and so far the hours have been perfect. They kept telling me that whenever I start going back to school, to let them know about how many hours I want. Well, I started my college classes, and the night before my first day I was scheduled for 10-4AM (night stock) by 4 the truck wasn't finished. But I knew I had to get some sleep, so I asked the rest of the guys if they would care if I left. They all said it was cool and I got out of there. The next day I got a lecture from my manager about how I always need to stay till the truck is done. Why are they asking me how many hours I want if I can't leave at the scheduled time anyways?

Who are the union reps in your store? Most stores have 3 or so depending... Speak to one of them ASAP (like now) about your situation. No, you do not have to work past your scheduled time for now Kroger is on your time and you are not on theirs. Find out about your Weingarten Rights, get a copy of your contract, and start getting informed of your union rights. Good Luck.

anon is right, you do NOT have to stay past your scheduled time. Your schooling is important make that clear to your management and scheduling clerk. Do not let them screw you out of a good education with bad scheduling.

Talk to your reps.

i think they are able to ask for you to stay over once in a 7 day period for one hour.  does that sound right?  but yea if you are scheduled till 4am then when that whistle blows just go clock out and leave!

with a screen name of Dallas, I need to ask if you are in Local 1000 ?  If so then contct them and your rep to get this fixed .  There is always the possibility that they could give you the request to stay in the form of a demand or no choice. If that comes up and you leave  ( following your schedule ) they could   ( not likeley but seen it happen a few times ) come back and say you are terminated for insabordination.

first get it straightened out with the store director first and then contact your rep to have them look into it. Now as to why I am asking if it is local 1000 is simple. They have a poor reputation for getting back or following up with their members.

ok in my contracts UFCW 75....  it says in 11.15

"..the least senior associate(s) shall then be required to remain for not more than one hour's work beyond their scheduled quitting time provided they are notified two hours prior to their quitting time."

i dont see where it says once in a 7 day period.  i was talking to a fellow employee who mention that to me.  i will research that tomorrow.

now my contract does say...

ADDITIONAL HOURS - "associated shall retain the right to refuse call-in hours and refuse hours beyond the associates quitting time."
