The subject sounds a little harsh but I am sorry. The store I work at there is a long time employee that has ran over customers several times. This employee is "special" I mean he has down sydrome or somthing I do not know exactly what. But he gets excited about sports and cannot pay attention to what he is doing. He does not mean to run over little old lady's it just happens when he gets excited. Awhile back when it happened he almost lost his job. They decided to let him stay on as long as he works with me. I am a utility clerk and he does good but he cannot work alone. He is not allowed to bag at all  no matter what he cannot bag it is off limits. So I try to get him to sweep or clean the dairy doors when I am called to bag. But the thing is he will not stay by hiself long. he will go look for me. I go to where I just say whatever. I have mentioned ot to the managers and they seem to just over look it. He just walks around when I get called to bag. I figured they would decide to let him go back bagging. I am getting to where I hate having to work with him. I hate for him to loose his job but he cannot seem to understand store sweeps every hour he saids "I just done it" I try to tell him we are sussposed to do it every hour he just cannot understand. He only works with me one day a week and most of the time it is Tuesday he works when we get the supply truck he seems to do good with that. I just don't feel like I can keep doing this. I have to worry about where he is when I am bagging. Some days I cannot get away to go check on him. I just would like some feedback on this. Please do not be mean. I am a very kind hearted person and I would hate for him to loose his job.

Thanks

There is really only 2 options:

1) Keep doing it
2) Stop doing it

That's basically all you can do. You could try to pawn him off on someone else i guess >_>

We have a bagger who is special needs in his 50s and have been with Kroger for 20 odd years. Hes is useless. He puts on this front that he is working hard really as slow can be but when he is out of work you see him riding his bike and other activities as fast as ever.

Funny how he plays the system.and we pick up his slack.

Maybe he does the best he can. Why do you say he is useless? If he is special then he is not useless. I asked for everyone to be nice. Yes I am the OP. I did not feel like logging in lastnight. But anyway you do not need to call people like that useless. They did not choose their body. So you have no right calling anyone useless.

Frankly, I'm sick of everyone calling retards, "Special".  Calling them a different name doesn't change the fact that they're retards.

YES! YES! YES! BagBoy hit the nail on the head with that comment!!! I've worked with several guys over the years some might call "special", but I've been friends with them, and they are some of the coolest associates around...They might not be "just like everyone else", but they have an infectious enthusiasm for the job and the work, they are some of the most dependable when it comes to attendance, the customers love them, they are "part of our Kroger family", and they friggin' ROCK!!! Plus, we need all the help we can get some days. Having them around makes for such a better workplace, as it forces people to consider the needs of others over their own!!! If you don't like it, too bad...DEAL WITH IT, PEOPLE!!!

Mentally challenged, mentally handicapped, even "mentally retarded" I can handle but you don't need to call them retards.

There's people who are mentally handicapped who do their job very well. There's a guy at my store who is and he works as a bagger/cleaner, I've never heard anyone complain about him, he's always on time and always speaks to the customers. If anyone's bothered, it's their problem not his.

Nothing wrong with the word special. I was in special ed in school and have a learning disability I also have other issues. So what. I never call anyone retard. If this was back in 50's 60's or earlier the word retard would be ok. Just like the N word. Calling them retard is like calling someone the N word or calling them colored. That's all I will say I just didn't really know what word to use I am sorry if I offended just wanted to point out I am special myself and so what.

That's why they gave him to you. They think you'd get along perfectly together and you're a cute couple.

look - its simple....

if you do not want to handle another "mentally handicapped" person then just tell them that.  you are an employee and not a manager or trainer.  just say that you will not from this moment on be accountable to watch over anyone but yourself.  tell the employee in question that he now needs to go see the particular manager over the front end and not you but you are still "pals".  when he does come over to you, immediately take him over to the manager in question and walk away.  you are not paid to do what they are seeking.  do you have the training to handle this?  hell no!  do not do it unless they pay you $5/ hr more to train/babysit others.....
