claiming hours

does any one know / or ever heard of a higher seniority employee claiming hours from a lesser seniority employee BUT THE HOURS ARE LATER THAN WHAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY SCHEDULED FOR?  I take it that it would be permissible by the union agreement.  It doesn't stipulate otherwise and I get it that this is rather abnormal but still should be a valid choice right? 

any input would be helpful.....

Most contracts state that if you are schedule x numbers of hours and its been posted then you're to work those hours. If they tell you to go home you can file a grievance with the union and claim the money on those lost hours.

Senior employees have first pick of preferred shifts.

 our contract doesnt say that. it says that you can claim hours.  doesnt yours?  from what you wrote it sounds like what you are saying is that you must work the shift you are scheduled. i like the other responders answer "senior employees have 1st pick of preferred shifts". but i would like other opinions and even some hard evidence

i have taken later hours than my schedule before. you just have to get it approved by management. normally if both can do the work it, mindful of the 10 hour layover rule, there isn't much of a problem.

Most of the time senior members can claim your hours, but it would have to be from the following work week after the completion of the working schedule. If they gave you hours this week typically you are to work those hours. If they give them away and tell you to go home you can file a grievance on those scheduled hours and get paid for not working. Thats typically how most contracts work. A worker is guarantee those scheduled hours

ok this is getting too convoluted.

all i really want to know is can you claim somebody's hours if those hours are of a later starting time?  for example  I am scheduled 8am to 4 pm on Monday.  Mary is scheduled 11 am to 7 pm on Monday.  I have more seniority then Mary.  Can I simply claim Mary's hours?  This would mean that by 3pm on Saturday I would go to management and give in writing that I am claiming Mary's hours on Monday.  If approved I would then work the 11 am shift and Mary would work the 8 am shift. 

Is such a scenario allowed?

If the schedule is written already you cannot, but you can do it next week granted she not your superior.

Under my impression, yes. As long as they can work it.
