Paranoid about getting fired.

I started working at Kroger as a cashier about a month ago. I got maybe an hour of training, if that, by the greeter that works there. And then I was on my own. I feel like I'm constantly bothering the floor runners and manager because I wasn't trained well.

I've also had some screw ups like completely shredding a check in the printer, not realizing a check hadn't printed and put in the register, and getting a warning for a write-up because of it. I've gotten customer complaints about not knowing how to do things properly and I get talked to about it, but I don't see how they can be that upset when I really didn't get taught how to do much. I'm so paranoid that I'm gonna be fired because I don't know what I'm doing, and when I ask for help/need help, the floor runners get all snippy.

Most recently we were very busy, and a customer was asking me questions while I was ringing someone up. While I was getting some help for the customer asking questions, I came back to the register, and they were gone. They didn't pay for anything as the balance was still on the monitor. I called over a floor runner to over-ride the transaction, and told them what happened. I'm so nervous to go into work on Wednesday because of it. The only good thing about working there has been the other cashiers and baggers. Everyone else there just wants to prove they have a bigger dick than everyone else.

Am I going to get fired, or am I really just paranoid?

It doesn't look good but you're probably better off.  It sounds like being a cashier at a grocery store isn't the right line of work for you.  If you have to work in a grocery store, there are lots of other departments to choose from.  It sounds like you just weren't trained right.  Unfortunately, since you're not in the union yet there's not much you can do if they do decide to let you go.

Don't lose sleep because of it. Just explain to your boss. You should still have your temporary checker number. I've made my share of mistakes too. But got better with time. Ull be either let go from checking or given the time to improve. Believe me. That crap will become second nature to you. You'll be punching in codes before the number even crosses your mind.

my suggestion to you is this.  slow down, dont rush swiping the items.  take it easy and keep chugging along.  go to whoever it is that you reported to and have an earnest conversation with them.  say that "you are very eager to do the best possible and want to prove myself.  however i believe that my initial training was inadequate. "  give it a try!

It's not that bad.  If you are giving it a good effort, and actually learning from your mistakes, you'll probably be fine.

You'll have most of it down after a month or two.

Because of the union, it takes a fair amount to get fired.  Unless you get talked to in a closed room and sign papers, and this keeps happening, you are probably ok.  Just make sure to keep receipts for everything you buy.

It would be a good idea to take your time when tendering the order.  Ask the other cashiers if you aren't sure about something.

Hints:

Pressing "Void" and then "Enter" often undoes the last thing you did.

The void button is one of the most powerful buttons on the keyboard.  Pressing void and then doing whatever caused the problem just might fix it.  Did you accidentally hit "Tax Free" instead of the card button?  Void and then "Tax Free".  Did you accidentally type in $21 cash instead of $211?  Hit "Void", 21, Cash.  Did you run EBT on food stampable items, but then the customer finds their shopper card or coupon?  Void, and then the card button will often undo EBT.  You get the idea.

You can key in 30021 for a store coupon on food stampable items, and 30022 for non food stampable items.  It's also possible to change the value of a manufacturer's coupon the same way you'd change the price of an item, but that leaves more of a paper trail.

15 then Sign On prints a receipt in progress.  Sometimes it's easier to check something on paper than making sense of the mess on screen.

You can cancel entire orders up to a certain dollar amount by voiding all of the items on the order one by one, then pressing Void then Total.  You may be required to write it down and get signatures depending on the dollar amount.

After over 30 years of service, I can honestly tell you this. The company has told me before, that they don't have the money and time that it takes to train. Honestly. And I heard that from one of the "big wheels." I told him that years ago, we were taken to a trailer where they had simulators to train us on the registers. And we were there for a WEEK!! I started back in the early 80s when the electronic registers came into being. I have quite a "fan base" as you can/might imagine. I have a good connection with many MANY customers. AND, I feel that it was all due to my training back then.
Now then, we just, a few months ago, had a gentleman start on a register. They told him he wasn't holding his own and they were going to send him to another store to train. He came back and I asked him how things went. He told me that no one would help him. ALL THAT TIME AWAY, and these *^##holes didn't do on thing to help this guy out. I spent less than 1 minute with this young man, and now...he's ranked high in our district in elm scores. 1 freakin' minute!
This company continues to piss me off!
And until they get a CEO that truly knows what is going on on the floor with out listening to his minions, he/they will never know the true facts!

I've talked to the other cashiers there and their experience is almost parallel to mine. As much as I don't really like the job, it took me long enough to get it and I don't look forward to job hunting again, especially while being a full-time college student with no money.

Thanks for all the replies, and I will certainly use all advice given. I feel a lot better about it now.

sometimes I wish I would get fired as I am one of those people that wants a new job but too lazy to hunt for one or go through the trouble of getting one. I never call in, always on time, do my job for the most part but constantly deal with lazy people on my team in which I have to pick up their slack or get assigned extra work cause I stock a little faster. BS I say!

Weird huh?

I am worried of getting fired. Two days ago, I got promoted to Frozen lead from produce clerk. But I have never ordered, I spend my entire shift on front facing and never ran backstock. Then today, I run out of 20 lb. ice and have never was told I had to order for my ends so I do not know if I have what I need for my ends. Am I going to get fired?

I doubt it.  You are on 90 day(or so) probation.  Frozen lead is only about $1- extra. If they don't trust you, they will send you back to being a clerk if that is what your union contract allows.

You definitely need training.  The Grocery manager is in charge of you.  He/she needs to get you trained fast.  Ask the Dairy manager for help getting trained too.

First, you need to learn how to interpret P4, W4 dates.  There should be a calendar in the office that translates the numbers for you.  That is the week we are in now if I am reading it right.  :(.

There is a way to see the sales plan on Enterprise Citrix.  There is also a way to print the sales plan off the copy machine at my store.  There is a way to find out what distros you are getting for the sales.  Browse thru the sales flyer early to get an idea of what will be on sale.

I think DeltaGrocery on this forum runs the Frozen Department.

Right now is when the ends are supposed to be changing.  You should be working an evening shift!

You can build the ends with some products off the shelf until you can order up to fill correctly.

Good luck.
