I was wondering if anyone could help me out here. I live in a non right to work state, but I have no desire to be part of a union. Now with my store they don't make you join the union when you are hired, they make the union mail us paperwork like a month later. I know this because I worked here before and that is what they did, however I had to quit at that time. So I never joined the union, now this time around I'm planning on staying around but have no desire to send part of my pay check to a fat cat up north who does nothing for our store. So if I refuse to fill out and mail back this paperwork, I was wondering what they can do/what will happen. Thanks in advance for any respones!

I don't know what would happen if you didn't respond to their paperwork, but.... I'd rather have the union then not have it.

I can tell you what will happen. If for any reason you get in any kind of trouble or dispute, they might help you one time, but not again. It's called freeloading. Why should one get the representation they need, and not pay dues, while the other pays his/her dues? THAT'S the way it's seen.

You will absolutely, without question, get out of the union what you are willing to put into it. I used to be cynical, skeptical...you could even say hateful and antagonistic toward the union. But when I decided I had enough of our lazy, evil, tyrranical bitch of a steward and our store decided to do something about it, it made a huge difference. And our store is a smaller one nearly 2 hours away from the nearest Kroger.

it is my understanding, and i could be wrong once again, that if you do not joing the union - the union still has to represent you as if you were in the union.

That's if the union wasn't filled with acid-spitting demons that can only turn back into people with a weekly donation of $8.16 or so.

Unions still have to represent you, but are not required to incur costs on your behalf.
