No. There are people who work @ Kroger and Target, as well as Wal-Mart. I work for a national retail chain and Kroger is my 2nd job. I made this fact known during my hiring interview with Kroger and they still hired me.

And that was their choice at the time of hire, and it means you probably not just WON'T get fired, you CAN'T. However, OP was hired without working for a competitor, so if he starts and they find out after the fact, they can fire him for it. But ONLY if Target is actually considered one of his store's "direct" competitors, which generally means within a mile or so, and selling groceries as a significant portion of their sales. However, if they are a "direct" competitor, even if you don't get fired for it, they can fire you for anything else you do wrong in the future, using working for competition as an excuse, so you'll need to keep your nose extraordinarily clean.
yes it is considered competition. And believe it or not, during contract talks, Kroger also looks at Home Depot as competition. They was experimenting with gas and small c-stores by some of their stores. It was two contracts ago and they stated it as a fact. Whoda thunk it.
But the competition think seems to be a call by the store managers as to if they waqnt to enforce it or not. if they have a problem getting help in, then they will over look it. if you place your Kroger job before what the competator wants you to work, then it is over looked. Been in many stores where there was Walmart workers , working in the kroger stores. Only probllem is that if management wants to get rid of one worker because of working for the cometition, then they have to almost get rid of all the employees that are working for a competetor.
There needs to be a fine line on what is considered a competitor. I mean they can pretty much consider anyone a competitor because they sell the same products they do. Heck, they're even moving into clothing. I worked at a clothing store for a short while so that means it would of been considered competition.

Ha! Very true. What with virtually all retailers cutting their hours, people still need to pay their bills. I personally know of at least three of my employees working for retail competitors (and yes, at Walmart that is a fireable violation)......But I be cool. No one needs to know that these poor folks are just trying not to starve!
have three of my part timers working for other places. ( Walmart, Target and one at kolhs ) I look at it this way. They was hired at kroger first. I make my schedule out on Wednsday or thursday morning. If they restrict their schedule due to the other job or can not come to work because they are at another job then they will not be on the schedule. I have had way too many of this ( my other job kept me late or I can not work this schedule because of my other job) being late or call in and want a schedule changed to give a **** anymore. If they do not give me an availability shed and are not available when I need them, then They get no hours. I got several store that have people that wants the hours to get full time, that I would rather give them the hours over my people that bitch and call in or show up late.

That's what happens at our store. I give people the side-eye when they call their union rep when they don't get hours because the hours are going to other people and not them when they have a ridiculous availability schedule due to a PT job. I get it about the money, but calling the union rep? Seriously? C'mon. I have wide open availability and I've been getting 40 hours ever since I was hired.
