Wanting to move up

Yes, I love the elections when they say you can make something for yourself in this country with good hard work. All it has ever gotten me was extra work and not even a pat on the back. Its more of "you didn't condition" or "you didn't fill this up". Basically in order to move up you need to become good "friends" with people who have a say in your promotion or being able to effectively pass your key retailing checks. They don't care as much about hard work anymore.

Maybe I should run for president someday. I would probably be one of the most honest candiates around in terms of "hard work" bull****.

Hello world,

I want to move up in the Kroger ladder. In my store, I have worked in every department that is offered. I want to move up from my current position as a cashier to something behind the desk. What are the appropriate steps I need to take and is it worth taking those steps to continue to enjoy working with this company?

Thank you!

Talk to HR in your store. Hopefully your ARM is as good as ours is.

Just so I understand, are you looking at salaried management, or something like cash office or loss prevention? If it's the latter, SayWhat has good advice. If it's the former, I know that Kroger wants a college degree (unless they've relaxed that standard). If this is not an issue, I would recommend you go straight to your district manager and throw your best, strongest pitch. Do it in person and dress professionally. This is your chance to sell them on how good you can make the business, your store, and them personally look.

Best of luck~~

I wouldn't suggest trying to move up in this company. They like people like you, because you have hope that you'll be moved up in a higher position. In reality they will use this as your weakness and keep you hopeful that you'll move up until the day you quit. Basically, the more you try the more effective work they get from you. I'm not saying that my work personally is ineffective, but they used my hope against me for years and years until I moved to another store.

@ Anonymous Cutter,

We can agree that the politics in retail is definitely weird. Long gone, apparently, are the days when one could pull themselves up by personal merit and productive actions. I don't know personally how advancement works in Kroger, but at Wallyworld it's definitely become what you just described. Same thing exactly. I DO still recommend to people the things I did to the O.P. on this thread-----it can't hurt----but it's all become such a popularity contest now.

Talk with your Store Director and see what steps you should take on promoting, I just got promoted to managment today. All I did was work hard and be very persistent.. See what job positions would suit your needs and if you have a decent store director he should help you.
