I have been working at Kroger for almost 9 years when suddenly I had my hours cut so much that I was reduced to part time status. I was at top pay, but now I make a little over $9 an hour now. I can barely afford to live as I am now being forced to borrow and take money from other people in order to pay my bills and live a healthy life. I was told about 10 weeks ago when this happened bu my union steward that if I get 40 hours for 12 weeks by showing up on time and busting my ass, I would get my full time status and top pay back. All was great until the start of this week when I saw the schedule. I asked my manager about this and he told me that Kroger no longer hires and accepts full time employees anymore. Plus he added that this has been going on for years now. I am distraught! Is any of this BS true?

Darden Foods, the corp. that owns Olive Garden and Red Lobster, recently announced that they have cut their entire work force back to part time for the first time in their history. What's really creepy about this is that no one is 'grandfathered' in; this affects everybody. Of course, all benefits have been removed as a result.

Their stated reason was Obama care. Apparently that plan is based on companies having to offer ft employees health care, or take a fine. Corporate America is responding with "Really? WATCH THIS. Pow, we don't have any full time employees."

We're gonna see a lot more of this crap happening before it's over.

I was under the impression the company couldn't change your scheduled hours to less than 40 if you were full time, but, yet again, that may only be in my division. And now that you're part time, they will fight hard to keep you under 40. They get emails from corporate when you get close and then your hours are cut again.

It depends on the contract, but they can't just "cut" you below 40 hours a week especially if you were a full time employee. I'm betting you have more seniority than most and I would contact your union representative. I would also tell your union representative that they lied to you.

Under our contract the only way they can reduce a full time person's hours is if all the part time people have their hours reduced to 0 and all the full time people with less seniority have their hours reduced by the same or greater amount.

Under our contract, none of the full time people have less seniority than the part time people. Once you go full time, you jump up to the bottom of the full time seniority pool, but the full time seniority pool is automatically higher than the part time seniority pool, regardless of start date.

Hey BETRAYED, what part of the country are you in and how many people are in your department? I would ask for a copy of your union contract dude. In our contract, we have a REDUCTION of HOURS clause. It's pretty lengthy but the gist of it says that any full time associate working more than 36 hours then all the sudden works less than 36 hours for a 4 week period average has this option. They can transfer and displace the least senior full time employee.

You need to contact your union representative.  They just can't cut you back like that, especially with the time you have.  Full time people get their hours first.  Then part time people get their hours.  Under our contract they cannot reduce a full time person to part time in order to save on hours.

The pay cap for part time employees and full time employees is diffrent, probably about 3-4 dollars higher for full time.  Lose full time- lose pay.  Sucks, but there might be some red circled pay notation in your contract.

Well to answer your question, Yes its true.  Kroger no longer hires full timers and wont allow any part timer to become full time regardless of how many years they have in the company or how hard you work.  Meaning they will cut your hours no matter what before it happens.  The only way to get fulltime is to hire into a Lead position.  Full timers dont give a crap til something like this happens.
