Is this happened at your store? This flim flammer looks for new cashiers or the young ones. He gives them like a $20.00 bill and confuses them by saying didn't I give you a 50? I know that sounds easy to catch. They know how to do this and say more than just that to get the cashier distracted. One man came in and did that they saw it on the camera as he was walking out he was raising his hands in the air like he was happy. Just wanted to give a warning on this.
I've noticed that lately at my store, the cashiers have been putting the money they get from customers on their desk next to them until they get the change out and hand it to you. Then they put it in the till and give you your receipt. I wonder if it was caused by people doing that? That way if the customer disputes the amount given to them, they can just look at the money next to them and see what the customer gave them.
If a customer says I gave you a 50 and they really give you a 20 or something we do a till exchange and count the money in the till in the back. That's the only wat to be certain for new cashiers.

That's the way it's suppose to be done anyway. If new checkers aren't being trained to that then it's the fault of the person training them.

"No, sir. You gave me a 20. If you give me your name and number i'll put it in the till and if we come up with overage we'll be sure to give you a call."
"Thank you have a good day"
*tosses the number in the trash*

I don't think that's anything new. My mom worked in a Kmart store for years and told me about that quick change scammer crap then. It's annoying though I'm sure for a cashier to deal with that.
This is why you always verbally confirm what they've given you as you're taking it. I've had customers think they're giving me a twenty and handed me a 50 or gave me too many bills.
Since it's gift card season we've been reminded to keep an eye on what credit card is being used so when the register asks does card match ID, try to make sure the customer give us the card they used not one that's theirs after using a stolen card.
This is why the high turn over is bad news. It costs $3-4K to train a new grocery cashier according to a study Coca Cola paid for. Kroger should be doing more to keep a stable front end workforce.
